A Spanish Lover by Joanna Trollope
I always find Trollope's style makes for easy reading and her insight into human nature especially family relationships so very perceptive and apt. Sometimes her books follow life so closely that there cannot be a "happy ending" or the conclusion we would like it to have. This is true of the Spanish Lover;it is fairly obvious that there can be no satisfactory development for the lovers ;she has chosen motherhood over her lover although she would like to have her cake and eat it but it is not going to happen. This is why I could not give it five stars;I was left hanging in mid-air as it were. But,still very much a good read for its literary style and character portrayal I recommend this and Trollope's other novels .

Not her best effort
I was a little disappointed in this effort from Joanna I don't think it was as good as her earlier works. As a rule I really like the way she developes her characters getting down to the nitty gritty of their character. However this book which was largely about the relationship between twin sisters annoyed me a little and I fail to see how any man could put up with these insecure women. It is certainly worth the read as Joanna Trollope is a cut above you average Fiction writer, but not her best effort.

Spanish Lover

beautifully written
A great read. We all seem so ordinary until circumstances test us. That's when we realise we, and others around us, are not quite as we think. Joanna Trollope always delights with her insights into "normal" life.

Don't waste your time
The plot is simple. Twins are born. The first twin gets married and has four children. The other does not. Second twin goes to Spain and has an affair with a married man. She gets pregnant and has a child. The first twin in shocked. The end. The author thinks in 1950's style stories. I mean, is Spain so exotic to the people of the British Isles? It has been one of the most overcrowded destination for the people of the United Kingdom for ages. Kind of a silly story. Read something worth your time, unless you think that having a friend from Spain will make a woman wear gold hoop earrings in her ears instead of pearls. (This was in the book.) I kept wondering when the real story would begin. It didn't.

tedious novel with unpleasant characters
Realise this book is quite old, and I got it as a kindle deal, but not at all sure why I bothered to finish it. Both the twin sisters at the centre of the story are self-centred and behave disruptively towards those around them. Their parents are just as bad, as are Lizzie's four unpleasant children. Her husband Rob seems sensible and kind, but is a bit of cardboard cutout, as is the Spanish lover of the title. I really didn't care what happened to any of them.

Families
A story about two families one in England and one in Spain. The families are quite similar despite their different culture. The main characters are twin sisters who are striving to be individuals after one takes a Spanish lover. An excellent read with lots of strong characters.

Classic Trollope...
I haven't read one yet that I didn't enjoy. I always marvel at JT's ability to write conversations between characters that stand on different sides of a debate so that you can understand both sides. Contemporary relationships at their best.

Enjoyable read
I enjoyed this book as I always enjoy Joanna Trollope's books. but why after all these years hasn't an editor got the names of the Catholic monarchs correct? They are Ferdinand and Isabella, not Fernando and Isabel. Such an elementary error.
