An Oreo for the adult palate
I don't remember liking Hydrox as a kid -- it seemed like the poor man's Oreo. I still like Oreos a lot, but I think this cookie is my new favorite. It does have a deeper chocolate flavor than an Oreo, which you really notice after you've been chewing for a few seconds. It doesn't jump right out at you. It's less sweet than an Oreo, though it's still plenty sweet enough with that nice real-sugar flavor. The cream center of this cookie is a big difference from Oreos. This one is like a cake or cupcake icing, with a nice creamy flavor, whereas the Oreo has more texture than flavor, and Oreo filling has a Crisco-like density that I don't care for. Sorry for all the Oreo comparisons, but that's really what most people will have as a reference. This cookie goes absurdy well with fresh milk, and stands up well to dipping. It absorbs milk nicely without getting as soft as quick as an Oreo. From memory, Hydrox is 130 calories per serving, with two cookies being one serving. I think it was 19g carb and 1g protein, which would leave about 5 grams of fat. It's not a health food, despite the elimination of trans-fats and corn syrup, but it's a nice treat after a workout. I don't know how Oreos compare in terms of calories, but these were more filling, and at least part of that is the better taste that gives more satisfaction with fewer cookies. You could actually eat two of these and stop. I didn't.

I always like these
These are just as good as ever very expensive but very good a different taste and texture from Oreos

but it seemed like I kind of got ripped off on the second ...
I ordered these Nov. 22 after listening to the Planet Money podcast episode about them and remembering having them at my grandma's house when I was little. They're expensive, but they are yummy. I have to say, when I placed an order on Dec. 9 of the same cookie, this package was the same price, but the package was significantly smaller -- barely larger than a cell phone. I see that the weight is the same. I guess it's psychological, but it seemed like I kind of got ripped off on the second order. I doubt we'll order this again because it's just too expensive for what you get. Nice novelty and we really do prefer them to "the other brand." If the price gets more reasonable, we would be regular customers.

Check your container size! Good dry/firm cookie alternative to Oreo.
The "Original" Hydrox cookies were unfortunately slightly before my time, so I can't comment on the authenticity of the re-released product. I've always been a fan of oreos, so when I heard that they were the dramatic lucky survivor chocolate cookie w/ creme filling cookie, I figured it was only fair to seek out the original cookie. The flavor profile isn't exactly what I imagined when I had read about the Hydrox flavor from reminiscing fans. The overall flavor is hardly discernible from an Oreo, the creme filling might be slightly less sweet, but still borders on sickly sweet (I'm much more of a cookie fan than a creme filling fan when it comes to oreos). The cookie, however, is very different as compared to oreos. Oreo cookies crumble and get very soft in milk. This is a property I like, but Hydrox cookies on the other hand stay firm even when dunked and are much more of a crisp (hard) cookie. I like splitting my oreo-style cookies when eating them, and Hydrox cookies split nicely.I have yet to A/B "blind" taste test between the cookies, but I wouldn't hesitate to grab a bag of Hydrox cookies over Oreos if everything else was equal.SIDENOTE: If you order the 13 oz, make sure you check your package on arrival. I was shipped the smaller version - I checked based off another reviewer's comments. Amazon (as usual) did right by me once I brought this up, but I wouldn't have noticed if I wasn't alerted.

A great cookie is back
I have fond memories of Hydrox as a kid with my father and now with children of my own, I began searching for Hydrox to share with them. I couldn't understand where Hydrox had gone. I've never truly liked the taste of Oreos, so I left the chocolate cookie world behind... but had recently discovered the Keebler Simply Made version, which I think are far better than Oreos. Then last week, like a bolt from the sky, Amazon put a recommendation in my field of view and it was Hydrox. I was blown away. Where had they gone? Why did Amazon have them? I began to research and now I understand that through a series of company buyouts, it was slashed. Now thanks to Leaf and Amazon, I ordered my first real Hydrox in years... in decades. No high fructose corn syrup. Just real chocolate flavor. That wholesome cocoa smell that hits your nose when you first open that bag? Wow. It's like I am eight years old again. Thanks Amazon!

Hydrox cookies. (Should not have made a comeback.)
I don't like being that person that gives bad reviews, but sometimes it has to be done.As far as I can remember, I've never purchased the Hydrox brand before. I did lastweek for my husband since he said they were his favorite cookie when he was younger. We received our order this week and several of the cookies were broken, and the packagehad a small hole in it. I immediately informed Amazon and they said they will be sendingout a new bag. (To my disappointment.)After I emailed Amazon, my husband tried one of the cookies and said they taste nothinglike the originals. Again, since I had no idea what the originals taste like, I tried one. Thiswas one of the sweetest cookies I've ever tasted, and that was not a good thing. It wasway too sweet. I hate the idea of tossing food in the trash when so many people go hungryeveryday, but not only will I not eat the first bag we received, but I have no plans on eatingthe replacements. The taste is just too nauseating.Sorry for the bad review, but the new manufacturer needs to have a meeting with his productiondepartment and quality control.
