best CD of the jug band genre
As someone who has collected most everything available in the jug band field from the old Gus Cannon and Memphis Jug Band stuff through the J Band,Jim Kweskin, Geoff Muldaur and the sadly unheralded South Memphis String Band, I would have to say this is the best single Jug Band CD out there. If you only buy one to represent this genre, get this and immediately. If you don't enbjoy this, there is something wrong with you. The playing by David Grisman, John Sebastian and Jim Kweskin is mesmerizing and the vocals, especially Geoff Muldaur and also former wife Maria are exemplary.

good music
I play in a Jug band and really enjoyed all the songs. The band I play in plays some of these songs.

Jug Band Extravaganza- a Singular Event
I was fortunate enough to attend this whole event- earlier as a musician with one of the bands (the Tarantulas) at Golden Gate Park, and later at the film "Chasin' Gus' Ghost," and then at this great show recorded here. I've been waiting for this CD to come out so I could have the memory of a really wonderful night. It was pretty amazing. The mayor had issued a Proclamation making it "Jug Band Weekend" in San Francisco, and the turn-out at each event was incredible. Jim Kweskin came and watched a bunch of us play. This recording is good, and while it conveys the feeling and the depth of sound as we heard it then, it would be tough to get all the emotion across. Jim Kweskin was great--Geoff Muldaur's voice is incredible, John Sebastian is one of the greatest harp players on this earth, David Grisman kicks ass, Maria Muldaur was in exquisite voice. In addition to the GREATS who attended were the gentlemen of the Barbecue Orchestra, who served as something of a "house band."They are Jon "Doc" Stein, Peter "Spud" Siegel, Stew Dodge and Kenneth "Turtle" VanDeMarr (of Dan Hicks and Christmas Jug Band fame,) from Portland, Oregon. This was especially sweet for me, having spent many years on the Coast of Oregon listening to Spud and Turtle in various bands. )I'm still listening to the CD, so I don't know if the recording reflects that Dan Hicks appeared as a special guest- but play he did and it was cool.)Of course the place was packed, and it was packed MOSTLY with jug band musicians.I really enjoyed hearing "Blues My Naughty Sweety Gives To Me." We do it ourselves- as I'm sure many of the other folks- and we really sang along well.Whatever this album might mean to me and the rest of us who were there- it remains an excellent compilation of real jug songs songs and the finest artists that ever played the form...

If you expect a compendium of jug band music you will be disappointed. This appears to me a collection of dubious tunes by one band, who engage in a little too much mutual back slapping for my liking. There again I am not an American, so what do I know. The Memphis Jug band CD is a far better option.
