Verbatim M-Disc DVDR 4.7GB 4X with Branded Surface - 5 Pack Jewel Case 98899

Bought these disks to save my family pictures to. I have digital pictures from all the way back to 2003 and have been worried that 3 backup hard drives are not secure enough to ensure their survival over time. After hearing about M-Disk being able to last for one thousand years I thought I'd give them a try, no harm in having another medium to secure memories on. They arrived quickly through Prime and were packaged in a box with packing material and looked to be in good shape. I started burning pictures and videos from 2003 and the process went smoothly and without any hiccups or errors. I checked each dick for errors and completeness and found them to be burned properly. I have a fairly large library of video and pictures of slightly more than 110 gigs plus another 6 gigs of mp3's that I was able to save to these disks. I purchased this pack of 25 M-Disks and have one left. Seeing as my library seems to grow exponentially with each passing year, 2017 is going to need several M-Disks when I burn it. I ordered another 25 pack and have it ready to go. I am considering making another copy of these archive disks to keep in another location like a safety deposit box just in case, I'd very much hate to loose all of these family memories as my children are growing up way too fast for my taste. Then the grandchildren….. I'm going to need a lot more M-Disks. These disks are pretty pricey compared to regular DVD's but the peace of mind in knowing that my family memories are much more secure on M-Disks than on DVD's is worth it in my opinion and the price will come down as more manufactures start competing in the market.

I've been using these discs for quite some time to archive as well as backup some critical files. I've done some testing and so far I have not been able to get one of these discs to fail. Of course the 1000 year lifetime is theoretical, but so far they have been very solid and resilient discs. In my opinion, they're the easiest way to have as permanent an archive as possible. If I had to come up with a complaint, it would probably be that the warranty on most Verbatim optical media is 'lifetime', but the warranty on these discs is 10 years. Wouldn't you think they'd offer a lifetime warranty on discs that should last 1000+ years, before they offer it on their regular media? Overall a high quality disc and possibly the safest way to archive your data for the long-term.

These work well, but know that some RW drives will NOT write or read them correctly. I purchased an LG external DVD RW drive, and it works. The drive in my computer seemed to write successfully at first, but would never finalize the disc. I tried another computer, same thing.

You need the special LG burner drive to make these. I use NCH software to do the burn. And for the large 25,50,100 GB capacity disks, you need a blue-ray drive to read them. Of course, if you have the burner drive, you have a drive to read the disks with. But sharing could be an issue, since DVD (4.7 GB) drives are much more common, especially in laptops. I like that they are supposed to last longer 100 years, if you don't break them. I don't have to "be connected" to backup and restore files. So the physical security is much better than online cloud offerings, and the expense is one time, not an ongoing subscription cost.

It did not work on one of my dvd burners, but was able to burn on my second LG device. Never have used M disc before, so Iam unsure if it was recorded correctly on the media to last the several lifetimes as verbatim claims. Secondly; which is fairly obvious, why do these disks have a limitied warranty if they are claimed to last longer than the life of a man? These are good disks, but I have to go to 4 stars as I am still not fully convinced that these disks will last 100+ years. Lastly do NOT think these disks can be abused and still be just fine. The disk itself says not to expose it to harsh weather, scratch it, only use a marker like a sharpie to write on it, etc.... If this disk was super abuse resistant like gorilla/ shapphire glass on a iphone It would get 6 stars, but for now only 4 is worth it.

This is my first purchase of M disc media, so there are a lot of things I don’t know about it. I don’t know what a ‘branded surface’ means, or why that is important. I was looking for a way to store 100 year old family photos and I knew that dye based DVDs have a limited life. I was able to burn a disk with these photo images on it, access them with both the original drive used to burn the disk and also view the images on my television using a bluray player. M disc in general seems costly, I wish it was cheaper so I could use it on a routine basis. This product cost wise is headed in the right direction.. How much are archival properties worth? Quite a bit, I think.

We purchased 2 - 25 packs of these when we saw they were available, because Verbatim has been a favorite of ours since we purchased their floppies back in the early eighties. We have been using M-discs for over a year (somewhere between 2 & 3 hundred Blu-ray, 50 to a 100 DVDs). We recorded live sporting events for most of 15 seasons at a rate of 90 events per season. Needless to say, we have a lot of backing-up to do. As far as the discs go, I have no complaints. We did have a problem for a short time, which was traced to a software problem that went like this....write a Blu-ray disc, then try to write a DVD, it would fail and also vice-versa. A simple system restart before burning solved this problem. BTW, we install 2 different Blu-ray burners in each computer and, as a rule use one to burn the Blu-rays and one for DVDs. This may have contributed to the problem, but we doubt it. Also, we have tried all the brands and configurations that are available so far except BDXL which we have, but haven't tried. Also, we have found that the Verbatim DVDs are playing in our refurbished testing player when the other brands failed (may not be consistent, only tried 3 so far). AND, we have decided that ALL videos we produce for our customers will be delivered on the M-DISCs (as of January 1, 2016).

Bought these in 2018. Very pleased and excited that i was able to make copies of every dvd that i had onto these m disk. For my own experiment, i had some extra m disk left, so i made a extra copy of one of my dvds onto an extra m disk that I had left over and i put put it outside, completely exposed to the natural elements of nature ALL WINTER from the day before winter started until the day after winter officially ended (i live on the east coast where at one point in the night it was -10 degrees below zero) then bung the dvd back inside my house to let it dry out for three days. I just popped it into a portable dvd player and it still works!!!! Im planning on taking the same m disk and setting it outside all summer. I will bring it inside the day after summer ends to see if it still works. Ill keep you posted. Thanks a million.

Can't really know if they keep data for 1000yrs as any M-Disk, but was a fast shipping and worked well on my M-Disk burner.

Does what it is supposed to. I am using the native burning software built into Windows 10 to archive family photo and videos. So far so good, no dud disks, they do what they are supposed to. I will post back again in 999 years, I'll be cheesed if it doesn't make it to 1000.
