The Old Scofield® Study Bible, KJV, Classic Edition

I was pleasantly surprised at the quality considering the price I paid for this Scofield Study Bible. The paper is a good bright white with little bleed through. The type size and font is easy to read. If you're going to give it heavy use, you may want to invest in a more expensive leather binding or buy a cover, as this one is only bonded leather, but it looks and feels more expensive than it actually was.

I have many KJV bibles, the Nelson study bible, Thompson Chain, and Life Application to name a few. All good bibles. This one is slowly becoming my favorite due to the ease of use and functionality of the on-page helps (cross-references, chain references, subject headings). Most newer study bibles have overkill on the pages which are very distracting. The references in the Scofield are probably the most useful and practical I've used. I will say that I didn't like it at first because I was so used to the Thompson Chain but the difference, in my opinion, and the reason I like the Scofield better is the on-page helps. The Thompson has some really nice features but they're just topical chain references in the margins some of which don't really apply to the text or context. The references in the Scofield really point you to better understanding what each reference is cross-referencing back or forward to. The Thompson has more in the back in regards to character studies and archaeological section but if you want a basic text KJV plus some helps this is the one for you. The bonded leather is very nice. I was skeptical about that at first but it's the nicest bonded leather bible I have however I do recommend genuine leather. I don't like ironed calfskin. Some do. To each his own. While the print size is small it is easy to read and the overall bible size is perfect for carry or to stick in a bag or car. Now, while this bible might be my favorite it might not be yours. I like this Bible. Mine is free of the manufacturing defects enumerated in some other reviews. The print is uniform and the red letters pop out but are not overly bright. Some of the notes and subheadings are very clearly pushing a certain theology, one that does not necessarily reflect the most widely held orthodox Christian beliefs today, but still are interesting ways of thinking about the biblical text. I’m interested in these annotations as a historical document as much as anything else. They’re 104 years old. Other features to recommend this Bible are that is has a concordance which seems to be pretty thorough, and also a dictionary of proper names. There’s also a subject index. The maps look pretty old, which is another cool feature. I just like old stuff. The center column references help me to make connections I hadn’t made before. The book intros are reflective of the kind of scholarship that was available at the time, which was not as advanced as what we have today, but they still help me learn something. Whether you agree with dispensationalism in principle or not, I think this Bible is a good addition to any collection. Also I do think the KJV, while it has certain faults, is a very beautiful translation, and keeps me enamored with the biblical text, wanting to read more. As far as the book itself, the cover is kind of a coffee-colored bonded leather, the pages have gilt edges and there’s a ribbon marker. It is regular sized/personal size. Not sure what size the font is and I have no way to measure it but it’s not particularly huge. It seems similar to what you would find in a standard newspaper.

I am very pleased. A new one is $127. Ii don’t mind used and this one is barely used.

Got what I paid for Good bible

I love this Bible. I have an old hardback version from the 60's, which happens to be a more updated version than this one with the original text. I have bought a few of these as gifts now and keep one for myself. I like the study material in general, though I do not totally agree with it. I also like the gilt edges and the nice, sturdy box it comes with, which I keep it in all the time when not reading it. The ribbon is nice. The paper and binding are nice enough. The font is a bit small, but easily readable for most. My only problem with the construction is the quality of the bonded leather used in the cover. It feels more like stiff plastic than leather. I have other bonded leathers which feel more pliable and softer. This stuff is very shiny, as if it has a thick clear-coat of paint over it, and doesn't feel supple or leather-like at all. It has a leather-like texture, but not a feel of leather at all. It is stiff and does not lay open on its own, even in the middle of Exodus. It will take some real work to get it broken in, and I would gladly pay an extra $5 for a more leather-like cover material. Even a leathertouch cover would be better. I would also like to see this printed with the updated version's notes like the "New Scofield" reference bible I have from the old days. I prefer the older book to this newer one, but at least I know I'll have this decent one around when the great old one is worn out. I still recommend this as a nice KJV for regular reading, and recommend it as a part of a collection of study Bibles. It isn't perfect, but I liked my old free one enough to come and find these, so that means something.

So far so good. Font small, but bible built well. Oxford press quality, not what if used to be, but what is these days.

I love the Old Scofield Reference Bible. No study Bible is perfect, including this one, but this is one of the better ones around. If you’re either a KJV-only or have a preference for the KJV, this Bible is definitely for you. The printing is not the largest so I recommend the large print if your eyesight is not good. I’m glad I bought the Scofield Reference Bible as it’s being heavily attacked for many of its notes. I would definitely recommend this Bible as a great reference tool.

Scofield just set the standard. The comments, side correlations to other scripture, it was done by someone made living by him. There is no higher standard or recommendation than that and to seek him in his word and have a Bible like this for that reason. If this is also you, you will not be disappointed--at all in this work. Dies ist ein Klassiker unter den Studienbibeln. Ich will nicht verschweigen, daß Scofield umstritten ist. Er war geschieden, führte ein kriminelles Lotterleben, und manche bezweifeln, daß er je Christ war, sondern nur ein genialer Geschäftsmann. Seine Studienbibel wird aber noch immer von vielen gern genutzt. Besonders die Einteilung der Bibel in heilsgeschichtliche Abschnitte (dispensations), was die einzig sinnvolle Bibelstudienmethode ist (in moderner Zeit popularisiert von J.N. Darby), macht sie wertvoll. Natürlich ist Scofield nur ein Mensch. Schon auf der ersten Seite in Genesis steht ein Fehler: Scofield mutmaßt, daß Gott die Sonne schuf, als er sagte, Es werde Licht! "Sie war aber hinter einem Nebel verborgen." Eine klare Fehlinterpretation, denn die Sonne wurde nicht am ersten sondern am vierten Tag erschaffen. Wer also eine Scofield-Bibel braucht, ist mit dieser gut bedient. Der King-James-Text ist getreu den Urtexten, es fehlt weder Komma noch Strichlein. Die deutschen Scofields benutzen leider die katholisch umgeschriebenen Luther-Revisionen oder Elberfelder-Fehlbibeln, beide seit 100 Jahren basierend auf katholischen (und nicht reformatorischen bzw. urchristlichen) Grundtexten, das heißt: es fehlen hunderte Bibelverse und tausende Wörter. Schlimmer noch: Die hier rezensierte Scofield 1917 basiert auf Scofields eigener letzter Revision vor seinem Tod. ABER die deutsche "Scofield 1967"-Ausgabe basiert auf den verfälschten Fußnoten irgendwelcher Textverderber und ist gar keine echte Scofield mehr. Zum Buch: Gedruckt in Korea in wunderbarer Papier- und Bindequalität. Es gibt kein nennenswertes Problem mit durchscheinendem Text. Der Umschlag ist leider nur "Bonded Leather" (Kunstleder), aber dennoch flexibel und widerstandsfähig genug, um viele Jahre Schutz zu bieten. Klare Empfehlung für das Werk! Und der Preis ist unschlagbar.

Formato bellissimo, impaginazione e caratteri molto retrò. Versione un po' ostica per la traduzione con termini englesi antichi. In compenso una vera Bibbia su cui studiare.

I love this bible, i am always a little reticent to change the Bible i use but this is a really good one. It is a dispensational Bible, however i dont really know that theology so am not too bothered about it. The chain refference is really helpful, totally different to the Thompson one. The writing itself is a little smaller than the usual Bible text, its not giant print but not the bog standard either. I think this is a size nine print as opposed to the usual size 10 in most Bibles. Really in depth concordance in the back along with a subject index which is totally different from the chain referenses so in all three different references to use. And this is the only Bible i have used where all of the paragraph headings actually make sense and reflect the paragraph context. Only has one ribbon marker, I prefere 2, and it is a touch smaller than my Ryrie study Bible, but not markedly. Words of Christ in red; which i like and a nice intro to all books of the Bible. There is a wonderful panoramic view of the Bible in the begining of this Bible which i think should be in all Bibles. The cross references are ok, what you gain in the chain references you lose in the ordinary cross references. Enough notes to get you by, but not as many as the NIV study bible, but i prefere it that way. The only drawback for me it that it isnt wide margin so you have to squeeze notes in at the top or bottom. Also has side notes where some of the word translations are questionable and gives alternative meenings for them which is good too. And finally it is in English English and not American which, as a Brit i much rather prefere. All in all a really good Bible, oh and this is for the King James Version.
