Good
Great writing anf character development. Fun story and great world building. Few downfalls: the mc had more vibes with a side character than the king and 50% if not more of the book was detailed accounts of war times and the characters were seperated so their was no bonding. And one sex scene at the very end. It was a great book but it did leave me yearning :(

I really enjoyed this first foray into Megan Derr's writing
Though there were a few world building elements that I wish had been expanded, I remained engrossed throughout the story. I loved Allen, his personality and skill. I also felt for Sairica and his grief and the stress of needing/wanting a partner. And I thoroughly enjoyed each one of the supporting characters, they were all well-fleshed out and distinctive. I also loved how the languages were described and the way the author demonstrated Allen's expertise. What I didn't like was how little relationship development there was. I understand why things were escalated (after Allen's… adventure). And if not better pacing, then I would have wanted to spend more time with Allen and Sairica as a couple. This frustration has definitely impacted my interest level in reading the rest of the series. While I am interested in Lesto's story )as I enjoyed his character), I don't feel there was enough time with Allen and Sairica and now worry about that being the case in the next book. As I’m also a fan of same couple series, I would’ve also loved it if they hadanother book (or at least a short story) showing the two of them dealing with more court stuff together. Overall, I did really enjoy this book. There was some violence but it was mild and the world was fun to read about. I've already got a few other books by this author on my radar, so even if I don't move forward with this series, I definitely plan to read others.Final thought that may be a mild spoiler:I hate when characters cut their hair!!!! It's definitely an easy way to add poignancy to a scene for me. Also, I'm a sucker for some good hurt/comfort!

Beautiful and full of subplots that didn't distract.
I received a copy from the Author in exchange for a honest reviewThe story was a bit long at over 110k+ words and I felt it could be a bit shorter but despite the length, I couldn't stop reading. I was so engrossed in each page that I put everything else on hold to read the book without any interruptions.PLOT:As much as a love a good romance story, I love books with subplots almost as important as the romance and this book delivered. The story arcs were suspenseful, intriguing and perfectly inter-wined with the romance that it wasn't until I was done reading the book that I realized there were several mini stories blended into the book without it being obvious. This gave the book suspense and made it unpredictable, as well as provided some distraction from the tension between Allen and Sarrica’s relationship.CHARACTER: The book features beautifully amazing characters, each growing in their own way and learning to accept the love that was right in front of them if only they could get their act together and embrace it.I love how in the beginning Sarrica only saw Allen as Cold and beautiful even though Allen wasn’t cold, he was just used to hiding his emotions. It was fun watching him lose composure a few times and I squealed with joy whenever someone managed to make him laugh or blush. Despite the perfection that Allen put as a front, in the inside he was loaded with insecurities and scars.Sarrica hung on to Nyle despite his death; their marriage wasn't perfect even though Sarrica made it seem so, in fact, it was heading for doom had Nyle not died yet Sarrica refused to acknowledge it.Before I continue I’ll like to add that I love Lesto and he’s so badass and like a grumpy cat! I can't wait to read the next book in the series to watch is fumbling attempts at love. I’m almost sure he’ll screw up somehow.Back to the main couples, Sarrica and Allen relationship was complicated even though it could have been simple, Allen kept trying to prove himself and Sarrica, God bless his soul is terrible with words. I knew he didn't mean to come across as hostile to Allen but God, was he even trying? The characters were amazingly crafted and each brought their own internal and external conflicts to the table, creating more subplots that never distracted the stories but rather made the story richer as well as made us understand and love the characters even more. The prose was beautiful, simple and fluid despite the non-contemporary settings and speech patterns. Thumbs up to Megan Derr. One more thing… Tara and Rene are adorable together and nothing can convince me otherwise!

A world to remember
Derr builds a very intresting world to set this story in. Gender seems to be fluid but also un explained. Men get pregnant and women sire children. I found the book on a good read ennemies to lovers list, which I think is a bit of a stretch. No insta love here but rather misunderstandings. These conflicts helped the characters grow. I look foward to reading the squel. I recommend it to fans of Roux's Cut and Run series, for the simular dynamic of playful dislike.

Yes, yes,yes......Thank you Megan Derr
I first read this book as a free read, so I wasn't sure if I wanted to buy it in its expanded form.I'm so glad I did!!!!!!!!The story became so much better and more detailed. With new characters and original characters with more depth, the story grew so wonderfully , and made me greasy for the next chapter.I'm so excited that not only did I get to read this but there will be more stories in this series.I'm thoroughly looking forward to The Pirate of Fathoms Deep.....can't wait

This is an amazing book. I'd previously read and enjoyed the short ...
Wow. The High King's Golden Tongue is going straight on the top favorites pile. This is an amazing book. I'd previously read and enjoyed the short story this was based on but this takes it and it's amazing world and expands it in wonderful ways. Cannot recommend this enough.

Loyalty verses new love
The short story of High King's Golden Tongue is my all time favorite pick me up short read...must have read at least 7 times....I thought the characters are cleverly developed within a few short chapters. The expanding full version is slightly different, more flesh out but somehow it lost the impact that the short story has. I am quite familiar with the short story so couldn't help compare the two as I was reading. Still undecided how I feel about the high King. I am a keen DERR fan and had read most of her novels....however I thought the pricing was a bit steep (maybe the Aussie exchange rate is not too good)...given the chance I would recommended buying the shorter version for value for money and just as sweet.

Love this book
I love the universe of this series of books and the balance of angst and romance is wonderful. I have read them several times over and eagerly await the next!
