OMG my back is saved
This stem extender saved my sorry 63 year old back by not having to always lean over on long rides. When riding aggressively off road or to fit my folding bike into bag I adjust it to the lowest position. Have my cake and eat it too!!

Works well on Montague Bikes--but requires some work.
I mounted this on an Montague Allston bike, and it is a big plus. It gets me in a much more comfortable biking position, and it can be easily brought down when the bike is folded up. But, installing it is tricky. Here are some of the things I ran into:1. A professional bike mechanic refused to install it. He did not like the removal of the star nut. So, I decided to install it myself.2. To install it, I removed the fender and front wheel, placed the front fork on a wood block, and hammered out the star nut. This does not come out easily, I used a piece of aluminum rod and it took some heavy pounding. Octagon's how to install it film clip, which shows the star nut coming out with a few taps on a wood dowel, is very optimistic.3. I checked the dimensions and found the top of the stem was a .2 mm out of square. I made up a custom spacer ring and set it's dimensions so the space from the spacer ring to the stem top was 17.9 to 18.1 mm. Then, I clamped the Octagon collar on top with a home made head set compressor, and tightened it down to take any play out of the front headset. Before doing this, I cleaned the outside of the stem and the inside of the collar to be sure they were clean and oil free for a good grip. Once the headset was adequately tightened, I locked the collar down with 10 newton meters of torque (90 inch pounds) as specified.3. I then put in the stem, ran it up and down, did some final adjustment to keep the brake lines from kinking, and set the height. I then checked to be sure there was no play, and adjusted the clamp nut. Afterwards, a test run verified it worked well.In summary, if you have access to good tools, and are mechanically inclined, you can install it yourself. But, for the average person, I'd use a bike store. It's a big plus once it is correctly installed.

Excellent product!
LOve love love! It brought my handles to the perfect height so I’m not all bent over weirdly. Montague paratrooper. Not so easy to install...the darned star but was impossible to remove so just hit it until it moved down far enough. Tie the steering post to the wheel so it doesn’t all come apart and spew pieces everywhere like it did mine! I didn’t have to rewire my brakes but it’s a tight fit at full height. Needed to purchase an additional 1 1/4 inch spacers so I didn’t have to cut it.

You will need this.
Other then the complications listed in the review of the bike, this device does work. One needs to remove the front wheel, fender and brakes. This then allows the expansion nut in the stem tube to be driven out the bottom. One can then install the device.

and a steer tube that is cut too low to replace this piece of garbage with a better steerer later
Follow the directions to the letter, and you will be rewarded with a fork that has no star nut, and a steer tube that is cut too low to replace this piece of garbage with a better steerer later. You'll want to replace it shortly after installing it when you realize that there is no where near enough surface area left inside of its bore to hold onto what is left of the steer tube after you cut it. In short, this assures that the headset will work itself lose about once per ride. This wouldn't be that big a deal, if you didn't need to disassemble the whole front end and press the headset back together with a c-clamp every time, since it lacks any kind of compression screw. This is a solid example of "go back and do it again". I wish I could have my money back, and a new fork.

Really makes a difference if you are tall. Installed ...
Really makes a difference if you are tall. Installed on my Montague and drastically improved the ride. If you don't have the tools or the skills though take it to a bike shop. It is not a tool less install and requires physical modification to the front forks.
