white rajah, an action romance
This is a romantic novel written when the british empire was still strong and in eveyone's mind. The style and pace reflects this, but, written by a master, it tells a tale of love, jealosy, intreague, power struggles, and eventually murdelr. As in so many tales of this genre, there is a happy and slightly surprising finale, all in a land of mistery, on an island at the far flung edges of the empire. First read by me over 40 years ago, I still re-visit the island from time to time with the same enjoyment as the first reading.

What was he thinking of?
This is by far the weakest of the Nicholas Monsarrat books which I have so far read. One dimensional characters, extraordinarily gratuitous violence and little of the insight into human nature which characterised some of his earlier books such as The Story of Esther Costello and The Tribe that Lost It's Head.
