Meh.... it was alright
The character names were hard to read and my son kept getting the characters mixed up. He usually does really well following along with stories. He just turned 9 and he seemed to like the book more than I did. I felt it was rather boring and I forced myself to read the last half to him in one day so we could move on to a new book.

Charming
Ever since "Inkheart", I've been partial Cornelia Funke. I haven't read every children's book that she has written but I've read enough to say that I enjoy them when I have the chance. With "Emma and the Blue Genie", my feelings remain the same. Emma is a girl with 4 brothers who are brave in the day but scared of the night and at least one brother will visit in the night because he is scared of the night sounds especially the sounds that sea makes and ends up keeping her awake with their snoring because she loves the sound of the sea.So at night, she escapes to the sea with her trusty pooch, Tristan. One evening, a bottle floats to shore and of course, there is a genie inside. A blue genie who isn't very big named Karim and upon questioning of his unexpectedly small size, he tells Emma of how his nose ring was stolen by the master of Evil, the yellow genie named Sahim which of course is someone who must be vanquished so off Emma goes with Karim and Tristan to the genie's homeland. It is a night of adventure and wonders. Funke keeps the prose simple, charming and wholly appropriate for the ages of the intended audience.. The artwork by Kerstin Meyer is lovely and compliments Funke's story perfectly. If I had a mild complaint it is that the end comes too abruptly but maybe that means that there will be another story to come.
