Hard hitting and to the point!
This author is a classic, and he does not mince words regarding our response to grief. It is in the hands of God. This was a very helpful book, and perhaps even a turning point in my own grief over the loss of my husband. Many times the words stung, and yet I had to read them. Can we take the pain of loss with the perceived blessing of our lives as all coming from the hand of God? And will we rejoice in both too? Hard lessons here, and yet my heart was glad to know and be reminded that God is there and it is He who controls. Wonderful little book.

Very worthwhile reading
It is so easy to fall into a lifestyle of grief. John Flavel offers explicit help in using our faith and good sense to enter back into life and purposeful living while dealing with grief. Biblical based teaching and much needed. I think it good to have the teaching before experiencing life changing grief. It can help a person face the challenges and changes that come into all of our lives if we live long enough.

most helpful
I actually bought this for a friend. But I read the same material in Flavel's Works after I lost my wife to cancer. I can say it is really the only thing I read that was actually helpful, and helped me to move on. Highly recommended.

One must slowly savor the morsels that Flavel parcels out on nearly every page in this book.
Have never read a book so challenging regarding grief and the "immoderate" measures of grief that we, as Christians, oftentimes resort to after we lose a loved one (especially that of a child). One must slowly savor the morsels that Flavel parcels out on nearly every page in this book.It convicted the fire out of me regarding our often flawed view of grief. If we really believed what we say we do regarding the supremacy of God in our lives and that of eternity, we would have a view of grief lined up more clearly like that of Flavel. This man does not write from a theoretical or "book-only" viewpoint. His first three wives died and one of them died while in childbirth. He knew what it meant firsthand to suffer the death of those closest to him.I would recommend every Christian to read this book and meditate upon its truths!

The BEST book for grief!
My oldest daughter died suddenly a year ago. I was given many books and resources, but THIS ONE has been the best. It is a thick read, so I don't know if I could have handled it right after she died (inability to concentrate and such), but it is still worth giving to a grieving believer for whenever he or she is ready.
