My purchase came in a different box than this, that appeared to be from the early 1990's, especially since it included two coupons with expiration dates of 1996. The instructions were not clear to someone who does not know how to play chess. The board and the pieces are VERY SMALL.

Great for Indoor Recess
We live in the frozen North, so the kids in my son's 4th grade class have had a lot of indoor recess lately. They have also been learning to play chess in their math group. This game has been very popular with the kids because they can easily get thru a whole game during recess, and sometimes even more than one!

Poor directions
Cheap cardboard and plastic. Instructions are unclear. Not sure which piece is what.

A great way to learn, for kids and adults
This is definitely the best introductory chess set I have found. Comes with full instructions, a handy reference guide that slides under the gameboard and shows how each individual piece may be moved, which is also visible during play. The board is reversable--with one side being 'beginner' and having fewer pieces, and the other being 'traditional' with the full set of pieces. I initially bought it to help my 7 year old learn, along with a refesher for me, but my 4 year old is quickly learning as well. A fantastic buy. However, I picked mine up for under twenty dollars.

Great for beginners and elders
We had to order replacement QuickChess boards! After 10+ years and four children, our first one had fallen apart. Our second set I loaned to an elderly couple. The husband has early stage Alzheimer's, and the couple had heard that playing chess might help them both retain memory. They had never played chess before and were getting very frustrated at learning a new -and complicated - game. QuickChess to the rescue! It uses a less complicated board to teach the basic moves. When the student is ready, the board can be flipped over to a regular chess board and the remaining pieces put into play. Great twist on an old game!
