No - this is for your headphones. If you want to use headphones and charge you need an adapter that has a port for the headphones and one port for the charge

Does the lighting cable part that connects into the phone heat up or get warm with use?

I’ve never had a problem with the cable it self heating up. However, I have noticed that my phone heats up the longer it stays connected with it.
