Her comment was that i had to learn it, so I could teach her how to use it. I'm still on step 1 of that process. I'm very comfortable with entry from a keyboard and using devices in the Microsoft world. I didn't know anything at all about Apple, except that my grandchildren all have iPods and are eager to show me all of the things they can do with them. I knew I needed help, and in a format i could handle - a good, old-fashioned book! Ir has worked for me. The title is correct - I had no idea what could be done with an iPhone, and am still learning more every day. The book is a clear, simple and direct way to learn this new device. It walks you through the device, explaining how to access information and use what is supplied. I'm a little amazed at all of the stuff that comes "standard" on the device. I worked my way through the book, picking topics I wanted to learn about. I skipped the part about texting - i've only texted once in my life. However, when we were visiting relatives in North Carolina, we had a link with directions to a family party texted to the iPhone. (So now I've texted TWICE in my lifetime!) We used the maps function on our trip and found out the hard way that you need to have the device plugged into a power source for a long trip. Going back, we did better. At home,we were able to have a FaceTime conversation with our infant granddaughter. I'm still learning how to us Siri - but it works well when I have to call my wife while driving. I certainly recommend this book to everyone. For Apple people, you'll learn more about linking your other Apple devices and using them together. For non-Apple people, you'll get step-by-step directions with no jargon. This is a "Win-win" purchase for anyone. I'm continuing to learn and find myself coming back again and again. (You've probably figured out that I am an "old guy".) I wear hearing aids and in the next couple of years I expect to upgrade them to a Bluetooth version. In the meantime, I've ordered a Bluetooth headset and mike I can wear in the car so I can talk with both hands on the wheel. Old Scholar Review: Outstanding Must Have Guide to iPhone & iOS 7 - I have been purchasing the iPhone Missing Manuals for several years now and it just keeps getting better. This is a must have go to guide for anyone who has or is interested in getting an iPhone. Even if you are a long time user, his tips and tricks are well worth the time & cost. The keyboard sliding tip is one of the best I've ever read. David Pogue is very funny and creates a humorous, informative guide written in plain English, (with some tech references for us geeks), that really show you how to master your phone. This is not a step by step book, it is an outstanding reference that explains the what, when, why and how. I have friends who have owned iPhones longer than I have, yet I know how to handle my phone better because of this book. I always buy the new editions to find out what has changed, been updated or removed. These books truly live up to the moniker, "The book that should have been in the box." It is always surprising to me to see how many people won't take the time to learn how to use a device or some software. They struggle trying to use some of the basic features. What you don't know can hurt you. You won't have that problem by reading this book. Just buy it if you are on the fence. It is worth it and very entertaining. Outstanding Must Have Guide to iPhone & iOS 7
I have been purchasing the iPhone Missing Manuals for several years now and it just keeps getting better. This is a must have go to guide for anyone who has or is interested in getting an iPhone. Very helpful book
This book goes into much more detail than what Apple gives you. It explains all the basics of the iphone and iOS 7 and offers helpful tips. I found that it goes into as much detail as practical but does not explain features down to the very last detail. To do that the book would have to be 800 pages instead of 600. Definitely worth the money for someone new to the iphone.

The Manual Thickens
This is my fourth 'missing manual' (plus an eBook), and a much needed tool to understanding iOS 7. It's expanded to 586 pages of extremely useful information, covering everything from the A7 chip to zooming. There are, of course, a lot of new features that need explanation, for the minimalist designs the Apple engineers decided to use in its software aren't always helpful in describing their functions. A manual is needed for all but total geeks, and David Pogue has always come through with witty though thoughtful guides to comprehending yet another amazing technical device. Good for iPhone 4, 4s, 5, 5s and 5c, or whatever uses iOS 7. You really need this book for the helpful tips alone.

Unbelievable and beyond thorough!!!!
Purchased this incredible manual to learn as much as I can about ALL the features of my iPhone 5s! All I can say is WOW, INCREDIBLE!!!!! I downloaded it to my Kindle APP, so I will ALWAYS have it on my device for quick reference!!!! It is extremely thorough, well written and very easy to follow. Great photos of various menus and features for quick reference learning. This wonderful book lets you take as MUCH or as little as you need and is always there when you have a question about anything to do with iPhone!!! Excellent resource for those, like me, who want the ability to find out more anytime, anywhere!!!

The missing manual series is invaluable in providing in depth information on the product / software clearly and logically in user friendly language. You also get plenty of advice and tips to help get the most out of the product and a link to further information, updates and errata from user's experience. The layout, typeface and screenshots are very clear. Having just bought my first iPhone, downloaded Apple's manual, I couldn't wait for Mr Pogues latest and it hasn't disappointed! I have used others from the series; OSX, PS Elements, iWork, iPad etc and have been more than pleased. So, if you're looking for a reliable companion for your kit, I think the big green books should be your first port of call. Happy reading! Amazon's usually excellent speed of delivery was a little tardy on this one.

If you aren't used to the iPhone, you need some really basic help. How do I do this, where is the button to do that? You need some help with all the dumb, practical, basic stuff that will make this gadget useful. Trying to get help from the Apple site turns out to be useless. They seem to think you will just pick it all up by osmosis. Well thanks, but that isn't very efficient and I don't need the frustration. Asking guestions in Google was better but not ideal. I was therefore delighted to discover this book. It covers the basics in a simple, straightforward and easily understood manner. It then goes on to give you some cool tricks and neat things to know about. It does all this with a writing style that is clear, friendly and often quite funny. This is my "go to" book, and it hasn't let me down yet.
