Shame on the Canadian government
This is a fascinating film for the fact that the quints were not created by fertility drugs but entirely by nature. Even more fascinating is the fact that the Canadian government behaved shamefully by allowing the doctor who assisted at their births to remove them from the custody of their parents and siblings. His exploitation of the babies was fully supported by the government. Good performances by Roy Dupuis (when is he not good) and Celine Bonnier. Judith Doran

I like this very much
I got the tapes in good condition. Don't know how they found two sets of triplets to look so much alike. Sad story, but I liked it very much anyway.

This One Will Bother You Long After It's Over
The 3 star rating has more to do with my own personal tastes that with the quality of the movie. This is the story of the famous Canadian Dionne quintuplets born back in the days before multiples births became more commonplace due to artificial insemination.Oliva and Elzire Dionne are a poor farm family in rural Ontario, Canada. The local doctor, Dr. Allan Roy Dafoe, was only present for the last two births, the first three girls having been delivered by midwives before his arrival. The doctor, however, doesn't let that stop him from takeing over, directing the Dionnes as to what they can and cannot do with the babies, even up to having them send their other children away to live with relatives, to keep from subjecting the babies to possible germs. Elzire and Oliva are not even allowed to touch the babies. Finally, he has the Canadian government take the babies away from the parents, with custody awarded to the government and himself as their guardian. The babies are made a spectacle, with admission being charged to see them, thereby earning the Canadian government a tidy income and with Dr. Dafoe, of course, being paid for his services. Not satisfied with that, Dafoe goes on the speaking circuit, glorifying himself and making fun of the Dionnes. The parents finally get their girls back, but not until they are nine years old. The damage has already been done.According to the quints, the family never healed. The girls felt their parents treated them differently from the other children, giving them more chores to make up for the trouble and expense they had caused the family. I think it is more likely that the perceptions of the nine year olds were clouded by removal from the only home they had ever known and being placed in a home where they were expected to share chores, rather than being fawned and fussed over every day.Although I was aware of this bit of history, the movie was deeply disturbing and sad. Beau Bridges was very convincing as the doctor, as were Celine Dione and Roy Dupuis as the beleaguered parents. I'd love to think this kind of thing could never happen now, but the reality is, that children are still ripped from their homes and custody awarded to someone who is a stranger to the children.
