Very Loud
The storm whistle should come with earplugs! It is extremely loud. If that’s what you are needing, I definitely recommend it.

120 decibels according to my Apple Watch
I am not sure an Apple Watch is accurate at this sound level. Bringing the whistle 1 inch (2 cm or so) from the watch registered 120 decibels. This thing leaves my ears ringing for hours. Now that I've examined it closely, it looks like a standard whistle with a megaphone type cone over the output to make the sound louder. There is some kide of rattling thing like a ball inside the whistle. What it is good for: emergencies. Sound over great distances. I am going to have this around my neck when I go hiking. There is a rim over the mouthpiece to help you hold the whistle in. I think that is a good idea if I have to keep the whistle in my mouth for a long time. But it is too loud to blow all the time.Maybe not so good: everyday use. Like as a PE teacher. I think it can damage your hearing. You have to try to blow slowly for a reduced volume. Also, a standard whistle has a more comfortable mouthpiece. I would not get it if I have to blow it every couple of minutes like my gym teacher used to do.Bad. The mouthpiece has a square cross-section and it is hard to get a tight seal. Would have been better if the mouthpiece is more oval. So you have to sort of pinch your mouth. I figured it out in 30 seconds.

life saver
I'm going to tell you a little story, true story at that.So my wife and family have always thought my preparedness efforts were a lil bit kooky, and when this showed up in the mail the week before we celebrated the 4th of July at the lake they were giving me a hard time about buying a whistle to keep in my EDC bag aka murse.... well we get to the lake and prepare to head out in a friends boat to watch fireworks, 4 adults and 6 kids. The lake is big and choppy and it is known for the HUGE boats on it due to the size of the lake. We get almost to the other side to watch fireworks and my buddy says he's low on gas but should have enough to make it back no problem, we get to the cove watch the firework display and start to head back. We get about half the way back in total darkness with 30-40 foot yachts and speedboats going 50 mph past us and then it happens.... we run completely out of gas! well everyone starts freaking out, we are in a small boat getting tossed around by all the wake and chop of everyone else's boat so everyone starts yelling and screaming to get someone's attention to no avail, I suddenly remember I stuck this whistle in my pocket before we took off and grab it and start blowing, it only took 2-3 blasts before a boat pulled up to help, one of the guys said "whoever thought to bring a whistle did a good job cause that's the only reason we heard you and turned around" well they towed us to the gas station and all was good but had it not been for this whistle it could have turned out much different, bottom line I'm glad I had it and so were all the skeptics of being prepared!

Hiking and backpacking
I’ve attached this to my Camelback Octane 22 and it goes on every hike with me. I don’t have any fancy gadgets to test out the volume or reach with but my hiking buddies and I had a little whistle competition in the woods and mine was the loudest. The slowest hiker at the very end of our group could also hear it just fine. I covered my ears before blowing just in case. So I’ve come here to brag about this awesome whistle. I have no doubts it will perform well in an emergency. I need to grab one for my fishing husband while I’m at it. I haven’t researched or tested whether it works well when wet. I’ll come back and update if I remember to.

Loud
It's loud! Doesn't come with any way to wear it, so I'm not sure how the fam will take to wearing it around the neck (it's bulky). And I'm not sure yet if it really works under water. But, I'll let u know in an edit later.

Extremely Loud
I needed something for personal safety to carry with me when traveling and going to places where I can’t take my pepper spray. This is the loudest whistle I’ve tested. Great for personal safety. The tone is unique and really gets someone’s attention from up to 1/2 mile away. Years ago I used a storm whistle to scare away a dog that got out of its yard and came towards me.

THE LOUDEST WHISTLE IN THE WORLD - GREAT FOR AN EMERGENCY KIT BUT DEFINITELY NOT A KID'S TOY.
Haven't used yet and hope we never have to but I bought a whole bunch of items for earthquake or bugout kits for my 2 grown sons and their wives just to say, “I love you. Be prepared.” I hope no one ever needs to use any of the things I bought unless they want to or are going camping but we are in Los Angeles so it's better to be safe than sorry.I always read tons of reviews about everything I purchase. I am very diligent about buying the perfect item no matter if it’s tomatoes, a pillow, pens, a super-loud whistle or other emergency supplies. All the reviews I read on this whistle were very favorable. A lot of the reviewers commented on the loudness of the whistle so it IS NOT A TOY. But when you need to call attention to yourself if you're stuck somewhere, loudness can be your savior. That was good enough for me - perfect for the kits.I also included multiple mylar blankets, a mylar sleeping bag, mylar tent, plus everything else I could think of (light sticks, battery or hand charge radio/flashlight dealies, first aid kit, ankle support bandages, wet-dry matches, Israeli bandage (read all about it on Amazon - it's amazing), a solar camp shower, little cooking stove with fuel pellets, etc.). What I could get at dollar-type stores, I did. Saved money there. My kids have to provide their own food and water so I suggested they check Amazon because there are some excellent choices but if there is a zombie apocalypse... or worse, they are as prepared as they can be and they were thrilled that I gave them all this stuff. Great, thoughtful gifts!
