Thomasine & Bushrod (1974)

Blaxploitation opened up all kinds of opportunities for black cinema in the 1970s. Besides the usual gritty urban tales there were now black westerns as well. That’s what Thomasine and Bushrod was. Set in Texas in 1911 Max Julien and Vonetta McGee play a pair of outlaws. They get to rob and shoot white people, wear fancy clothes, and of course be chased by the law. They also get to play Robin Hood as they share some of their ill gotten gains with poor people. It’s a good combination.

I wish I knew about this work before Max Julien's death. The semi-complicated love story between Bushrod and Thomasine was unexpected in a non-typical Western. I wish he had the opportunity to make more movies during this period of time.

people; even in the 1970's. I don't see any racism coming from hollywood. Today, I see nothing but racism coming out of there.

Great movie. It is somewhat of a love story

Two actors from the seventies the guy is from his movie the Mack and the woman very cute has play in several movies.

... this movie is of mere historical interest. In my opinion. But I've watched it just once and fell asleep after an hour.About the DVD: it contains absolutely nothing but the movie. You can watch the thing or ffw in 10-minute-jumps (had to do that to get to the point last seen after I woke up again). That's it. No subtitles, but a lot of mumbling on the part of the actors.The quality of the DVD is fine, the aspect ratio of the movie correct.That's where the 3 stars are for.
