Review
Although classically-trained at the prestigious Berkeley College of Music, Thierry David prefers the freedom of ambient chill in his musical dabbling. If ZEN PAUSE is any indication, it seems he's making the right choice. David's debut album for Real Music, ZEN PAUSE is awash in colors and moods. It's the kind of album that makes you feel relaxed while listening to it, but at the same time has a dose of upbeat energy and lots of style. Synthesizers comprise the backdrop, while piano, guitar and light electronic rhythm revolve as the focal point. Producer Claude Challe champions David as the real deal and it's not hard to see why. This is ambient music that way it should be... cool, calm and full of character. -- Dan Cowan, Music DesignNoted ambient producer turns his attention to music for spas with this genre bending set that has new age meeting trip hop and club music. By bending electronica elements less than you would think, the genre splice is successful. A well crafted set for those making the transition from club hopper to suburban mom (and wondering how they got there), David has handily moved down-tempo from Ibeza to mud masks and pedicures with no bumps in the road; certainly not your mom's audio getaway. -- Chris Spector, Midwest Records

About the Artist
Internationally famous composer, director and producer Thierry David is one of the great names in new age music. Claude Challe, initiator of the Buddha Bar compilations, calls David one of the few French people to legitimately belong to the genre. Thierry David was born in Paris in 1955. Passionate about his music studies from an early age but influenced by his parents, he attended a prestigious business school in Paris. Upon graduation he volunteered with the French Embassy in Lima, Peru, and during his leisure time played with Peruvian musicians and composed his first melodies, inspired by traditional classical music and enriched with departures into jazz and excursions into the South American repertoire. A great traveller who stayed in remote regions for long periods, David succumbed to the charms of the Andean melodies. Following this adventure, David applied and was accepted into Berkley College of Music in Boston. On his return to France, he thought his education in business and music would open the door to a major record company but his efforts in this direction were not successful and eventually he accepted a job as head of advertising with the ad agency Grey. For fun, he composed ad jingles and when one was heard and accepted, he resigned and threw himself into his music, doing all of the things musicians do to survive but creating his own style and his own musical world. With this clear view of his art, David fully invested himself in the burgeoning venture Koka Media, which is today recognized as one of the great musical catalogues. David says of his musical style, "When my first commercial record Human Inhuman arrived on the shelves, it crossed many different styles (classical, jazz, Indian, opera...), a blend of instrumental music that could be enjoyed both as relaxing background music not really needing attention or listened to more intently. Now we talk of 'lounge music,' which suits me as long as beyond the apparent simplicity of the compositions, there is recognition for the high degree of precision exercised by the one who takes care over the results, spending time adjusting the sounds, blending them and refining the arrangements of his compositions."

Watch for two albums with the same title - Zen Pause.
Very good album; esp. when stress is high. My very favorite song on the album is "Silhouettes at Dusk." This is a very strange album since there are two albums by the same musician with the same title and (almost) same cover image, yet they have different songs (except for the title song "Zen Pause." So, if you are ordering only one of the two, be sure you get the right album when you order or download.

Excellent Ambient
I first discovered Thierry David by listening to the Spa channel on Direct TV's music channels. I appreciate the relaxation levels to which this music can take you. Thierry does a wonderful job of creating great atmosphere without sounding cheesy, which I find all too often in this genre - I want to relax without feeling like I'm in the waiting room of a massage parlor. Most importantly Thierry takes you on multiple journeys. The tracks work well on their own or if played in succession - the beauty of the composition is that this doesn't matter. Zen Pause is one of Thierry's best albums, you won't be disappointed.

"ZEN PAUSE" IS NIRVANA FOR MY SOUL
Soothing rythemic instrumentals awash in colors and moods that takes the mind to an unspeakable destination. I rate it a 10 on a 5-point scale.
