Berserk, Vol. 1

Wow I've never been a big manga fan or really read anything in that genre. A few issues of dragon ball but really nothing. Have watched a few shows but only the 1st and 2nd season of jujitsu kaisen. Other then that watch a few episodes of demon slayer, hunterXhunter, dragon ball and dragon ball z, but never finished them or watched them cause my brother is into them. I'm 40 and have never read or wanted to read a manga. But the way someone was talking about this one BERSERK, it was all great things but said it was very emotional and just different then alot of what's out there and stuff like that. I don't know if it's true cause I only have this as comparison to what I like which is Batman, DC (some of their characters), not a big marvel guy. Like image and some of the stuff they do with Kirkland and now ghost machine from Geoff Johns and alot of other top names. And the 1st graphic novel is read was WATCHMEN and it's things like that I find myself coming back to, not always cause I love a good batman story or story set in Gotham. So I love those things and this volume of BERSERK was amazing. I'm hooked already bought up to volume 6 and I wanna tear through this. Story even though I don't know much, what I've seen and read makes me want to see and read much more. Love the art style, the weapons the dialog, ALL OF IT WORKS AND IS BAD ASS. Some of the coolest full page sword swings and other things that were just amazing. Can't wait to learn more and find out more. And didn't even bother me you have to read it from right to left not left to right lol. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!!!!!!

Was suggested to me by a close friend who understood I liked grittier manga with a good plot. Have heard of Berserk before but never read the comic. Now I'm hooked!!!

I've been hearing about Berserk more or less since I really got into manga, but it was only recently that I truly decided to look into it. I had heard that it was violent and bloody, but I never thought much of it, believing it would be something along the lines of Rurouni Kenshin or You You Hakusho. I could not have been farther from the truth. And I could not be happier about it. Berserk is truly the single most violent and gory manga I have ever come across, but the story is intriguing enough to keep me engaged.The story itself follows a man named Guts. Yes, Guts, like intestines. It's actually quite fitting considering how many times *SPOILER* he slices someone in half. Guts is a main character I feel we don't see enough of in manga: an antihero. He's not the virtuous knight in shining armor. He's rude, he's crude, he's violent, and more often than not he comes off as a psychopathic jerk. But for some reason, I still enjoy his character. Most of the time it seems he's fueled solely by anger and revenge, but that's what makes the few short moments when he seems to truly care all the more special. We don't see any of Guts past explained in this volume, but we get hints that he's been through something horrible. It's enough to keep you coming back for more.Now as for the artwork, I must admit I was a bit taken aback for a moment. Most of my life, I've dealt with much lighter artwork and stories. However, within a few pages, I began to fall in love with the artwork of Berserk. The shading is very heavy on most pages, something that usually doesn't go over so well in manga. Heavy shading can quickly make things blur together and disappear so that you have no idea what's going on the page, but not in this case. Kentaro Miura somehow manages to heavily shade nearly every panel and somehow build in incredible amount of depth with his images, and without making the panels look too busy.Now I'm going to talk about the one thing that seems to turn most people away from Berserk (besides the gore). The pricetag. Many of the volumes went out ofnprint in the last couple of years, and scalpers are ready to take advantage of the hardcore fans. Check the prices of certain volumes, and you're looking at a price of $50-$2000. Yes, you readnthat right. I've seen a copy of an out of print volume listed in "fair to poor condition" for $2000. Do NOT pay over $20 for these books. Dark Horse, the English publisher of Berserk, is aware of the scarcity and the pricejacking. They are currently reprinting the series in order of scarcity. I myself am an impatient little narwhal, but I'm also a frugal one. I overpaid for two of the volumes before doing any major research to see if there would be a reprinting. I don't plan to make that mistake again. My lessons to you today, my darlings, is to just be patient. Dark Horse is working toward fixing the scarcity issues. Only buy the volumes when the price is right.Now, my word of warning to all of you who are new to this series: Nothing can really prepare you for this series. It's violent, and bloody, it's downright disgusting at times. There is sex, and nudity, and even rape. There are demons and monsters so horribly ugly that you've never seen the like, even in your worst nightmares. I've read manga like Attack on Titan. It pales in comparison, in my humble opinion. This series is hellish in all the right ways, and it's got this gal hooked. I love everything about it so far, and I plan to stay with it for the long haul.

Berserk is a series I have wanted to read for a long time. I'm a big fan of dark fantasy stories (A Song of Ice and Fire, Dark Souls, etc.) so I knew this was something I'd love. The anime is incomplete, as well as difficult to find, so I decided to read the original manga. Before reading this first volume I had some knowledge of the series, specifically the events of the first story arc, but for the most part I did not know what to expect.Volume 1 of Berserk starts with a man named Guts walking into a bar, killing a group of robbers, ordering the sole survivor to warn his master of his arrival, and leaving. This is our hero. Right from the start it's clear that Guts isn't an ordinary human; he's missing his right eye, has a fake left arm that functions as a repeater crossbow while also concealing a cannon, and wields the Dragonslayer, a sword so ludicrously large that it's a wonder any human could lift it (let alone with one hand). His design alone made me like him immediately, as his many injuries and weapons make him look like a hardened warrior as well as making him very mysterious. As for his personality, Guts is someone who lives for conflict. In particular, he loves fighting Apostles (humans that have become demons). He has total disregard for the lives of those around him, believing that "anyone who dies because they get caught up in someone else's fight is a small fry who doesn't have the strength to survive in the first place". He's a very interesting character and different from most protagonists. I look forward to seeing how he develops as the story goes on. The only other character worth mentioning is Puck, a small fairy-like creature who is essentially the comic-relief of the story. He doesn't suit the tone of Berserk and I didn't care much for him, but it's not a big issue and I don't mind his presence.The world of Berserk is a bleak one, to say the least. Compared to this, Westeros is Wonderland. Berserk's world is inspired by the Middle Ages with the addition of magic and monsters, something I always love to see. It's a world full of kingdoms, mercenaries, demons, and bloodshed. Unfortunately the first volume does not go into much detail about the world beyond this and I will have to continue reading to find out more. Overall, it appears to be a very interesting world.The artwork is absolutely fantastic. The characters and monsters look detailed as well as varied. The background isn't always shown, but when it is it looks great. Honestly, the artwork was my favorite part of this book. The book does come with a Parental Advisory sticker on the cover and for good reason. Berserk is extremely violent and does occasionally feature nudity (albeit a very minimal amount). Personally I would recommend Berserk for ages 16 and older, but the choice is entirely up to you.The book itself is in great quality. This is the first manga I've ever physically owned so I can't say for certain how it compares to other series, but I had no problems with it. The paper quality was fine and the cover art looks great.I really enjoyed the first Volume of Berserk. Of course this is just the beginning of a story that has been around for over twenty years so I have a lot to catch up on, and I can't wait to read it all. This first volume does an excellent job of introducing Guts and the bastardized world he lives in. The artwork is beautiful and and the writing is solid from beginning to end. Overall this was a great start to a manga often hailed as one of the best, and I look forward to reading the rest of this legendary series.
