Great book, but online content is only available to students in a class who have a teacher to set up an account.
I really liked this textbook, but it isn't for the self-taught due to the online content. Admittedly this is not a problem with the book but with the way I thought I could use it. I'm not a teacher or a college/high school student - I bought this book because I've been teaching myself German with a Skype teacher, and this looked like an excellent textbook that I was hoping would provide some structure to my learning. From what I can tell, the problem for someone like me is that the online element of the book (which is substantial) is inaccessible to individuals who don't have a teacher to set up an account, so I was only able to use about 60-70% of the book's content. For the price, missing that much of the book didn't seem worth it to me so I returned it. I liked the way the content was set up in a logical learning sequence. The "class" activities seem like they'd be effective for college/high school students. I gave it 5 stars even though I couldn't use it, because it seems like an effective book. Wish I were back in a class!

Great, but no CD
I want to start by saying that this textbook is great. It has tons of practice activities, which is important for learning a language and it gives cultural information. However, the textbook is a bit outdated in the sense that it has a lot of listening activities that used to be on a CD, but they've stopped selling the CDs or including them with the book. Therefore, about a fourth of the exercises are useless because there is no audio. I only took off one star for this though because the book is still amazing and it is very easy to find free German audio online. Overall, I would definitely recommend this textbook!

Great text for class but poor for individual study
THis book is the gold standard for modern collegiate beginning study of German. But, it is based upon use of an expensive audio program that is extra from the book. Alosa, this book shoudl solely be for classroom based learning. It is near useless for individual study.

Buyer Beware!
Buyer Beware! Though the description and photos leads one to believe that this product is both the book and the code to access online content it is not! This is JUST THE BOOK! I paid $133 for this book. The code for online content cost an additional $158! That's a total cost of $291 that I now must pay. The book plus the code is $170 at my son's college bookstore. Shop around and purchase elsewhere. I sure wish I had!

Good price for a good book
Bought this book for my introductory german course and it is a good book! I’m happy I bought it off amazon instead of renting since I would need it for the next 3 german classes I will take.

I would like to take advantage to all the on-line material for ...
I'm using this text for self study. This text is primarily designed for a traditional classroom setting. Parts of text include video clips, answers to exercises etc. are only available if you are enrolled in a formal class. However, a few of the spoken exercises are on-line. However, the text would be better for self-study if I could have access to all the on-line material.

Schadenfreude
If this is required for your German class, get the Kindle version for about a tenth of the price in any bookstore. The workbook will still cost you an arm and a leg, though. My German friends told me this is an extremely bad method of learning the language, but I think a lot has to do with the professor teaching it, as well.
