This product allowed me to find my burried electrical line. It works great.

I am searching for the phone line that comes up my 500 foot driveway in a rural setting to put in a sewer line that will go right over / under the phone / DSL line. At first I connected the leads to the 2 active lines. The receiver registered 53 volts. First good sign since phone lines have voltage and I was worried I might burn out the unit, which it did not. It signal only went out about 5 feet. I then connected to one active line and the ground. That turned out to be the correct connection; don't forget to turn the transmitter to transmit since turning it on does not automatically start transmitting. The user manual has lots of examples but being new to this, I wasn't sure which connection to use. The receiver comes on in AUTO mode, the most sensitive setting. It was so powerful, I stood there with the receiver at waist height and could follow the line at a walking pace. When I got to the spot where the sewer line was going to cross, about 250 feet from the transmitter, I put the receiver in the least sensitive setting by putting the receiver in manual and pressing the down arrow several times. Even at the lowest setting it still picked up the signal loud and clear. I then got on my knees and swept back and forth until I found the line and started digging. As I dug down, I used the unit to pin point if I was getting close. I did not want to cut the line so I was very cautious while digging with the shovel, even though in my area, the phone line is in a metal conduit. Just for fun, I even used the unit to find where my sprinkler values were buried. Overall, this unit is very impressive. I read several reviews of cheaper units where there were complaints of poor user manuals and weak signal. This unit is powerful and the user manual is very extensive... almost too extensive, but I would rather it be very detailed when I use it for more complex projects. Also note that when I first connected the unit to the phone line, I disconnected the modem thinking the transmitter signal would damage the modem / router. It started raining so I disconnected the unit and put the modem back online and had to continue later. When I went back out to continue hunting, I forgot to disconnect the modem. I finished flagging the spot and remembered the modem. It didn’t do anything to it and my internet service is working normally. I don’t know enough of the technical details of the transmitter to know if it could damage a modem / router, but in my case, it did not.

I bought this because of all the issues I had with the tethered device types. It's a bit more expensive but it does a much better job. I needed it soon after I bought it, but it will take some time to learn how to use it effectively. I didn't find the spot where a squirrel had mostly chewed through. The signal strength tapered so slowly that it wasn't until I replaced a few 100' long section that I discovered this. Looking back, I think it might have been telling me it but I missed it.

I have been trying to find a buried landscape light step-down transformer... Bought a house and they buried 8 and I can only find 4.. I have tried banging on the ground, I have tried a thermal image camera for the heat signature to no avail and fell back to a wire tracer that said it could trace an energized wire...Well it didn't on a low voltage line AND even when I hovered it right onto of a step transformer box I know it didn't read at all and that’s 120 Input and live and <6inches ...I figured this thing is as much use as a $35 unit and for my purposes totally useless as the premium was simply for energized tracking ..disappointed on my requirements and misleading web information but the unit is beautifully packed, high quality finish so I don’t want to be overly harsh on the star rating just make the point there is misinformation here !

Traces wires in walls, ceilings and floors no problem! This thing works but for tracing wires in walls but you have to turn the signal from the transmitter way down and the sensitivity on the receiver down. I had a string of outlets in my new house go out, I was able to trace the wire to the cause of the problem. I needed to trace the wires because after pulling all outlets to check for a loose wire, I was stumped. It turns out that the last home owner decided to add an extra GFI in the run and decided to wire the original GFI backward instead of to the line side to keep it from popping. Well it popped but I didn't know it because it still had power. So I was able to use the cable locator to trace the wires to the incorrectly wired GFI and hook everything up properly. I also used it to trace a disconnected piece of romex from a junction box through the ceiling where I can't fit to see where it went. The instructions aren't a great translation but I think the tool is intuitive enough to use without them anyway. It can also trace live circuits, but the voltage readout shows about 10 volts low compared to a middle of the road multimeter on a 120 volt ac circuit. Maybe it's not made to read AC, I don't know because the instructions aren't very clear. They are clear that it can be used on circuits up to 400 volts. But I'm not an electrician and if you're not either don't hook it to live circuits.

This is an amazing product. I love the digital signal strength display. Makes it really easy to figure out exactly where your wire is. Very accurate device. Well worth the price.

Not accurate. Couldn't pinpoint the exact breaker that I was tracing. It alerted on the breaker above and below and across. Not safe. It is not all all fine tuned. From switches, I attempted to track circuits in the attic. Picked up so much signal from other wires even that it was useless. I tried auto mode as well as manual mode, neither gave useful information. The battery life is not impressive and immediately drops the 1st of 4 notches after about 5 minutes of use. The other drops take longer but leads me to think this new battery already can't hold a full charge.
