Yes, this really is a knife/machete. Longer and thinner than your typical survival knife and shorter and wider than your typical machete. Look at the specs. SOG offers a 13", .08 wide machete. Their Seal Team Elite is 7" and .24 wide. This thing is 9.5" long and .15" wide. Definitely a tweener. Steel. Yes, thinner than a typical survival blade. Definitely a sense that if you are battoning logs or chopping saplings it might fail. I have some other SOG knives and you can definitely tell quality is a step down--but hey, this was a $25 buy on an Amazon sale so what do you expect. Finish. It "looks awesome" and if someone is coming at you with this thing you are definitely not going to take your chances. The serrations are pretty good and blade is sharp, but not sure the saw is going to work too well. Handle. Uh--look at the SOG machete. Better than a really cheapo plastic, but they definitely save money on the handle. It does have some checkering and its got holes for a lanyard, which I would definitely use. But again, its $25, what can you expect. I do like the pommel on the end for light striking duties and maybe some digging. Sheath. Again, a tweener. Nicer than a machete sheath and dig the accessory pouch for a sharpening stone or multitool. Appears decently made. BUT, still looks cheaper than more expensive knife sheaths. Why 5 stars? When you accept this knife for what it is--its great and I think an excellent purchase for $25.

Well let's start with the title SOG calls it a machete me personally I think it is one of the best if not the best bowie knives I've ever found in this day and age with all the crazies out there if I need a equalizer I know I can trust the three-point tip razor sharp blade teeth that I know personally will cut through a 3-in thick pine branch and even a skull puncher on the butt of the handle to do me justice it's a very great blade for close quarters work tactical work survival and to any buyer that is debating on whether or not to get it If you feel that you really need something that you could trust and depend on this would be the blade for you One downfall is that the handle is a little bit small for my hand though it's made up well enough with a treaded grip that is anti-slip and I'm confident cannot be taken away from me and combat but I like how sog tryed to pass it off as a tool and not a technical weapon

I bought this knife to replace my old cheap machete for cutting through brush and vegetation. When I first took it out of the box today my first thought was just "wow." This knife is huge and menacing, and a steal for $29!! It's got a nice solid weight to it, and full tang construction. I went in the woods in my backyard to give it a test run, and it performed very well. It comes pretty sharp right out of the box, and slices through plants easily. It can also take out thin trees limbs if need be. I found that the tiny area of serrations on the blade are kind of pointless. The serrations on the back of the knife, however, can serve to strip leaves from trees/plants, and pull vegetation to the side. Overall too big and heavy to be a good survival knife, but its perfect for what I got it for: a solid replacement for my old machete.

I bought this reading the reviews, and going WOW this thing sounds like its the next best thing to sliced bread! Well...I'll go over the pros and cons. Pros: Things freaking huge. I mean, alright I've carried knives but heck, this thing is HUGE. Great for defense against an animal if need be. Its dang near 16" inches, its a big, solid, knife. Saw Edge top. I find this to be kinda useful, just be careful when using it, cause your stairing at the knife edge while using it upside down, or you can cut from the bottom up, your choice. Hammer/Little Metal Butt Cap. Honestly I've found this to be quite unique. You can use it as a tiny little hammer if you forgot yours, a tiny little coconut cracker, its just a nifty little add on. Now for the ugly... Edge. Alright maybe my definition of razor sharp is different, but I find it to be kind of a let down. Dont get me wrong, a brair bush here and there, a small twig, a plant, gone. Somewhat heavy brush and above, your done for. Actually, your not done for, but you're going to be there for a while. While on a trip with my father, he asked to use it since we got lost and had to blaze our own little trail, he had difficulty cutting back plants with it. It could be sharper, and I am looking into a professional knife sharpening service for it, since it was sent to me without the edge im looking for, I'm not sending it back, since they probably will put the same edge on it. It will cut, which I guess is good enough, but I've found that using a cutting motion, as if your cutting a tomato, works the best....I'm wanting to cut through brush, not cut tomatoes..... The tiny little serrated part....god how I hate this. I understand that knifes should have this, I understand entirely, but on a knife this size, its just dumb placement, I mean really we got about 8" of serration on the top. If you need a small serration like that, you should already be carrying a multitool, whether it be A Leatherman, A Gerber, HECK EVEN A $20 Ozark Trail Walmart Multitool, has a small serration, about the same size, so to put one on a knife of this size, is, kinda useless. In the end, I love it. A feature I found it quite useful for is flipping cover objects. I do alot of deep woods photography/wildlife photography, snakes are one of my subjects. They hide under bark, they hide under rocks, they hide under anything that is lying on the ground. Instead of using my hand, and possibly dying from a venemous snake bite, I use the knife and slide it under the object and slowly lift it. THIS I LOVE THE MOST!!! In the end, I love the knife, its big, it does its job, and I may be really picky, it'll cut through branches and plants....with a few swings, but if you don't mind that, its a great knife. I love mine and would buy another if anything happened to it. The knife is great, the metal is tough, the sheath is, a sheath what more can I say it holds the knife and it doesnt stick out. this is a sog jungle knife made in the usa ,(go usa jobs) it is an awesome knife, as it is lightweight and big. It can be used as a machete or a knife and could saw or chop light firewood with its sawback , the sawback could have been designed better as it will cut a little and bind up as the blade widens more than the cutting teeth .. it has a small pouch in the sheath for a wetstone or or a small compass etc. i love this and hate to use it as it is so beautifull the blade comes razor sharp and has serraded and a smooth blase buy it you will be pleased..

This is my first SOG knife that I have purchased, however I have owned several of their multi-tools. I can certainly say that their multi-tools are some of the best I have ever used and not only are they quality tools they have a large variety catering to specialty trades that none of the other multi-tools makers do. I must say they did not disappoint me with this knife. It is a great big knife with a lot of features that make it a must have for camping and hunting. The blade is thicker and sturdier than any other knifes I reviewed that were the same size and price range. So this knife can definitely take a beating and give one. I must thank amazon.com for the great price since it was sold direct from amazon.com. I also have to thank amazon.com for being my favorite online store or my favorite store period. I think I finally learned My lesson about buying a name brand knife (or anything) at a cheap price, namely, IT CAN'T BE DONE! These Great, Venerated Knife Makers are putting their names on some very Flimsy Chinese JUNK and They are making a "Killing" off of that practice, No Doubt, Oh Well, Times are Bad and it's hard to pony up 300 bucks for a Good blade so I guess that's how You make a Living in times like these, SELL JUNK! O.K. That's not Fair of Me, in all Honesty this is got to be considered a decent Knife if You judge it against other 33 dollar knives, the scabbard has a plastic edge protector inside it but the point goes between it and the nylon it's supposed to protect unless You insert it very slowly and hold the end of the scabbard just right to help guide the point into it, that's a PAIN in the...nevermind. The edge will have to be finished to be sharp and that's not a problem as long as it will keep that edge for a few cuts. The grip should be good when bloodied but not muddied due to the tiny raised "nibs" of rubber being so short, but they do cover the handle pretty well. The choil (just in front of the finger guard) is too small for a Human finger to fit in so like the sawback & the pommel, it's just for looks. I have No Doubt that the knife will last far longer than the sheath because it won't survive a week in the woods but it has a pocket with velcro'd flap that would hold a stone, steel or fire starter that's under 4 inches long and 2 inches wide and it seems to be stitched well so if You are gentle with it, Who is gentle with a Survival rig???, it may last longer than I think. The Moral to My Review: If You buy a Knife for less than a Hundred Bucks, it's NOT from this Country. Save Your DOUGH and Buy a BUSSE Combat Blade because it will Outlive You and Your grand-Children!

I've carried this knife on a few short week long hikes. Out of all the other cheap bowie type knives I've had, this is by far my favorite! It was decently sharp from the factory, and it worked quite well on thin brush, plants, bushes, and twigs. Definitely helped clear the way when I wanted to make a path or clear out a campsite. Of course after sharpening it some more it proved even more effective. I did inevitably get a few nicks on the blade, but it filed out nicely. Probably the main purposes I carry this knife while in the woods is as a survival/protection. I haven't had to use it for this purpose yet, but I do trust it more then the other cheaper knives I've had. There are 3 holes in the handle to wrap some cord around the handle which is good to just have the cord around, and good to make the handle comfortable. The button release on the sheath is also very conveniently placed and easy to open, so you can get this knife out on a very quick drawl. This is also a very lightweight knife(17oz w/ sheath), not sure how they managed it but it's several ounces lighter then any other knife I have in this size range - and every oz off my back is amazing! The knife is also fairly well balanced for the size. The only other thing I'd note is the velcro pouch on the front of the sheath: was able to fit a small waterproof survival kit in there. This knife won't really replace a good machete or something you need to purposely cut through thick brush for extended periods of time - but it does do a decent job at it! You really can't go wrong with this if you need a light brush and good survival/defense knife, especially for the price!!

El cuchillo me encanto. Personalmente ya tuve la oportunidad de usarlo 1 semana en el rancho y hasta ahora ha resultado ser de mucha utilidad podando arboles y utilizándo en diferentes tareas. Ha resultado ser de muy buena calidad. Le doy 4 estrellas porque al ser un cuchillo personal hubiese sido grandioso le agregaran alguna banda como la que yo le puse al mío. Es una banda de cuero de res. Con ese pequeño detalle el cuchillo quedó sencillamente perfecto. La verdad el aditamento me ayudó a mejorar el comfort con la herramienta.

el cuchillo se veía muy bien cuando llego, venia con un filo con el que podías rasurar. el mango es muy ergonómico, no sientes la vibración y el kraton no raspa las manos. casi no tiene peso para el tamaño de la hoja y la capa protectora no se desprende con facilidad. la funda es de las mejores fundas de nailon, aunque por los dientes se raspa un poco. Parecía que todo iba bien hasta que decidí probarlo en un tronco de 6 pulgadas y lo estaba haciendo muy bien hasta que sentí que se patinaba de la madera, para mi sorpresa una parte de la hoja estaba doblada a un extremo, no había abusado de el cuchillo como lo hacen en youtube que hacen batoning y no le pasa nada, quiero creer que mi cuchillo estaba defectuoso ya que no había visto ningún modelo que se doblara. Ya había ocupado otro cuchillo para cortar el mismo tronco, el schrade schf45 que están hechos del mismo metal (8cr13mov) y resistió sin problemas, por ahora lo voy a devolver, espero que sea solo el mio ya que SOG por lo general hace buenas herrramientas.
