bought this as a add-on for my trailgo pro portable water filtration system. gonna put in on the outlet hose as a extra precaution/filter. my research on this was quite impressive, with numerous ppl stating how great it works and how much cleaner the water actually tasted. I haven't installed it yet because im saving it for "shtf" situations, like when these "centers" start poppin up and suck all the water up and spit out poison, sure y'all know what im saying!! but after 2hrs of research on this, I feel very confident that it'll work for my set-up! I bought 2 extra carbon packs which I HIGHLY RECOMMEND you do if you buy this item! pretty simple to use, self explanatory really. it screws together, so you unscrew it, open the package of carbon packs, and put it in the filter, then screw it back together, then, attach it to whatever filter you want. again, i cant tell you what the water tastes like or how well it works because im not using it until I absolutely have to!! but after lookin it up, im sure it'll work perfect. im gonna buy another one and use it on my sawyer squeeze filters!!

This little baby comes in handy, especially when you have a ceramic filter without an inner carbon core. One great feature about this filter is that you can add carbon and remove it whenever you desire. Of course you can buy the carbon refill packets directly from Katadyn, but that would cost a bunch of money if you use this filter frequently. I found a great website online that sells high quality Activated Carbon that is suitable to refill this filter. Twenty or thirty dollars can buy you enough activated carbon to use this filter for a long time. If you look closely at this filter you will see a beveled lip. This is used to rest the filter housing as it sits directly on top of your water bottle. This filter fits absolutely perfectly inside of my 64 ounce Kleen Kanteen. I hook this filter directly up to the output hose of my Katadyn Pocket Filter so the water passes through the ceramic before it hits the carbon. One piece of advice would be to slowly pump the water through the filter so that it has a long "contact time" with the activated carbon medium inside the filter. An ideal situation would be to slowly drip the water through this filter, but of course that would be extremely difficult. Another option would be to do what I did and buy two of them and hook them up in series (one after the other), that way the water passes through two carbon filters. Remember, ceramic filter remove particles and some bacteria/viruses, but they do nothing to improve the taste of the water or remove chemicals. Activated carbon filters on the other hand work great at removing chemicals and chlorine and subsequently improving the taste of the water. I highly recommend this filter. Just remember though, this filter does you no good unless you already have another filter to hook it up to. This filter does not come with any hoses and is impossible to drip water into the tiny holes. This is precisely why it must be used in conjunction with another filter.

I'm using this filter along with another pre-filter in a diy backpacking gravity filter setup and it's working great so far. I really like that this cartridge can be opened and the granules replaced. Thank you for that katadyn. I'm tired of buying use it once cartridges where the entire unit needs to be replaced if the granules are spent. This is a backpacking luxury item because it does come with a somewhat significant weight penalty. The weight of the cartridge full of granules is 0.2 lbs, or 3.2 oz, or 91 grams. This was measured using a postal scale. That being said, I like the taste of very good water so the weight to me is worth it. Be sure to flush the cartridge with water after filling with new granules because there will be a lot of black dust that needs to be flushed first. Excellent product and I highly recommend.

Katadyn Activated Carbon Filter cartridge overall 4 stars. Something should be done about that bottle and hose in the photo. They are not included!!!!Simply put, it works to improve the taste of the water when used with the Katadyn Pocket Katadyn Pocket Water Microfilter or most any other water filter and from what I've read can also remove certain other chemicals. DO NOT rely on this filter alone as a means to make water safe to drink.In testing with neutral water, the Katadyn Pocket Microfilter would impart an off taste to the water, presumably from the ceramic filter. In some cases, you can get a mossy or fishy taste from some water sources. This activated carbon filter removed those off tastes! 5 stars! I recommend an extra length of the same type of tubing and spring clip supplied with the Katadyn Pocket Microfilter if the cartridge won't seat well on your container.The cartridge is supplied with two packets of activated carbon. I couldn't get the cartridge to hold the entire contents of a whole packet and there didn't seem to be enough in 2 packets for 3 refills. Instructions were vague and left me with some questions on recharging the filter cartridge, so you do just what seems to make sense. Filling and reassembling the cartridge is not something you want to do in the wind! Avoid getting the carbon on the threads of the cartridge. It makes for gritty reassembly. After a day's use, I try to blow as much water out of the cartridge as possible to aid in drying and prevention of pathogen growth. I blow into the input port while tapping the opening of the output port for staccato bursts to evacuate water. You might want to keep it above freezing to avoid it breaking.The cartridge is designed to fit stably on certain types of containers, perhaps Nalgene, but neither my 22 oz Smart Source stainless steel water bottles or my canteen are in that population. However, the funnel for the SteriPEN FitsAll Filter can be removed and is a perfect fit on the bottom of this cartridge and allows the carbon cartridge to fit stably on my stainless steel bottles. You might need to support an empty narrow base receptacle because things could get little top heavy when filling. The carbon cartridge is also a really nice fit over the mouth of a standard 1 gallon milk jug. These jugs are light somewhat collapsible when empty, impart no off taste to the filtered water and are very stable when filling. Just be mindful that they can be a little difficult to sanitize because of protein and fat residues that could lead to pathogen growth and unpleasant odors.I like this cartridge because of its ability to be recharged, but in my opinion, $10-$12 for 2 packets to treat 120 gallons it too pricey. It might be possible to reduce recurring costs for recharging by buying activated carbon in l lb containers. So far, I have only been able to find activated carbon granules at reasonable prices at Wal Mart that is used for fish tanks. There are also NSF (food grade) sources available for bulk purchases online. The consistency of activated carbon used in this cartridge is powdery. When recharging, I would recommend inserting a cotton ball ahead of any powdered carbon to minimize carbon being pumped into your water containers. My cartridge was supplied with a disc filter to be inserted prior to charging and I didn't need the cotton. With each use, allow some water to pass to the side before filling containers otherwise you might get a very small dose of carbon. I am going to test this filter with granules, but expect that ultimately I will be looking at some way to grind them....a mortar and pestle, perhaps?Before buying this, I looked at making my own from parts at Lowe's. Now that I see how this is constructed, a homemade one is still on the table. I knocked this down to 4 stars because of packet situation and the cost of the packets to recharge. Hope to update this later if I find other acceptable sources for activated carbon.

This charcoal filter has been an awesome upgrade to my backpacking water system! I use it with my Sawyer Squeeze. I like how it improves the taste and removes any extra impurities in the water.It weighs 86g dry, but keep in mind that the charcoal retains water after use, so it does get heavier on the trail. One of my favorite features is that it fits perfectly over Nalgene bottles, making it super easy to filter without any mess or hassle.

Fits right into a Nalgene bottle, with an air gap, so you just slide it in and fill. I travel a lot, and I got tired of buying gallons of bottled water for hotel stays, so I bought a Nalgene bottle and this and never looked back. Instant filtered water for your hotel room, refilled when you want it. Of course this does not remove contamination from water, this is a "taste" filter, so it's only good for cities where the water is good enough to drink, you just don't want to drink water that tastes like chlorine. You can combine it with a Sawyer filter if the water also needs to be purified (it can be attached AFTER the Sawyer and then the two work together in one go)I use it with a Sawyer faucet adapter, so I can refill a 22 ounce Nalgene bottle in about 30 seconds directly from any faucet.Kudos to Katadyn for selling the activated carbon powder refill that goes inside. I like that they didn't choose to make extra money by locking you in to having to buy proprietary filter cartridges (which is what every other filter manufacturer does) which are just plane unnecessary and polluting. The only thing that needs to be replaced in an activated carbon filter is the carbon powder, which you can do yourself. The rest is just plastic - but other manufacturers make you throw it away and buy a new plastic case every time, when all you really need is a refill. One more reason I respect Katadyn.

Fits Klean Kanteen 40oz but doesn't quite fit the Kleen Kanteen Classic. I could easily cut and tape a sungle piece of a soda bottle to make an adapter but would likely just hang my gravity filter over it and possibly add another piece of hose to get every drop. With the Klean canteen it doesn't screw in, just sits atop. Probably best, because it allows air to escape as the water fills the bottle. Otherwise, I've had filters just not work until unscrewing from the bottle or bag the water was going into.After adding the activated carbon, I tamped it down even across the top and brushed off the outsides before screwing the unit together. Otherwise those grains will get in the way. Then I flush it out with 20oz of water or so. Water tastes great after that. There is a nice even flow here with a new sawyer mini filter.People talk a lot about these things removing cloudiness and bad tastes but I see less often them mentioning these carbon filters clean out chlorine and pesticides as well. Great for if using the tabs because the directions on the kleen kanteen say to not use chlorine in the bottle. Also great for when one might have to gather from streams near farmland while traveling.This is not my first activated carbon filter so I'm sure it will work just with these initial uses. I think its worth the extra few ounces.

On one of last year's canoe camping trips I had to filter out of a slower-moving, somewhat murky source. The water tasted funky. No amount of flavored drink powder could mask the nasty taste.Now, all my filtered water tastes...like water...Even out of that same slough.Great product.Thought about removing a star for the dimensions, it's short and wide vs long and thin. I didn't because I knew what I was getting into.It would be easier to pack if it were shaped more like a Sawyer Mini/Squeeze instead of double-stacked cans of tuna.It works though, and works well.The extra package of replacement carbon was nice. Will probably get 3 refills out of the included carbon granules. That's quite a bit of water filtered.There are other carbon elements on the market. I chose this one because of the user-maintainable aspects. It's not disposable.Glad I bought it. In am sure it will serve well for many years to come.

What is in the box is simply the cartridge cap that is shown on the bottle, There is no bottle and no hose, even though the box is big enough to contain them. And there is no disclaimer on the box that they are not there, either. The only way to know what you are getting is to carefully read Amazon's written product description and make no assumptions. but remember that the picture is also like a description!What you do get, will function as needed. Just don't expect the extras. I paid for that too much. That cost 17 dollars in USA, I have paid 24 Pounds here. This box is worth maximum 12 Pounds for me."

En complément avec le filtre sawyer, cette combinaison est redoutable d'efficacité.Le système par gravité facilite grandement la mise en œuvre, contrairement à des systèmes à pompe comme sur mon katadyn combi.La quantité de charbon actif dans chaque sachet est de 28 gr, le fabricant indique une utilisation pour 200L.Dès la première mise en service, je vous recommande de ne pas boire les premiers litres car il y aura des fines particules de charbon mélangé à l'eau. Donc même si l'eau est très clair, par précaution buvez après un cycle de 3-5L que vous allez jeter.À noter que le charbon actif n'est efficace que pendant une certaine période. Une fois le sachet ouvert, que vous l'utilisez 2 fois ou tous les jours, il faudra le changer au bout de 6 mois ou moins suivant la qualité d'eau filtrée.Pour augmenter la durée de vie du filtre, je prélève toujours mon eau dans une source propre, en commençant par pré-filtrer à l'aide d'une gourde ou une poche à eau dédié qu'à ça et un morceau de tissu fin. Ça débarrasse pas mal de petits résidus que l'on peut difficilement voir à l'oeil nu...Eau pré-filtré tissu fin > filtre sawyer squeeze > katadyn charbon actif > steripen UV.Ce système n'est pas des plus léger, ni le moins cher, mais le rendu est quasiment impeccable. L'eau est très agréable à boire, comme en bouteille. Elle n'a pas de goût dégueulasse (vase, eau stagnante) car le charbon actif fait bien son travail.Pour la dernière étape je préfère la purification UV, que le goût de javel des tablettes de purification ( micropur forte, aquatabs). Même si j'ai toujours quelques pastilles dans ma trousse de secours, ça ne prend pas de place ;)Le kit s'emboîte mieux sur les gourdes nalgene, et un peu moins sur la klean kanteen, il n'y a aucune rétention sur cette dernière. L'embout est assez polyvalent, il s'adapte sur un peu près tout.Le seul défaut du produit, c'est le prix ! Je l'ai pris car j'avais un code promo à passer.Je vais pas râler 😁
