The plastic cap and speed nut are both an exact match match for the original part on the original Weber Performer Touch-N-Glo from the early 1990’s. There’s a lot to be said for looking carefully at the orientation of the.stamped curvature (bulges out, not in) before separating the two components. I prefer to separate them and to start the speed nut on the axle using a socket wrench socket (9/16ths std or 1/2 thick wall impact) that can be tapped on using a hammer without damage. Once the speed nut is on the shaft I put the plastic cap back on it and push the pair snug to the wheel hub. My axle had rusted so I had swapped the rusted 3/8” rod for one cut from a 36” length of stainless steel rod. (A plastic wheel can’t carry enough load to benefit from a hardened steel axle.).

Whenever replacing wheels with locking caps ALWAY buy new caps since the original caps will be destroyed when removing them.

I put up with constantly putting the wheel back on my Smokey Joe Weber grill for quite a while. Got fed up, and searched for replacement hub caps. These are the perfect solution. They needed to be hammered on, but once in place they performed like new. A great purchase! 👍🏾
