CRL Quart Metal Sash Putty

the manfacture date was 08-30-22. CRL sez the product is usable for 6 months from date of mnfctr. Product must be applied when temps are above 40 degrees for several consecutive days. Purchased in Nov 22. Attempted to use mid March 2023. Product had hardened top 3/4". Open container & dispensed entire content (per instructions) into a different container. Was un-mixable - after removing the hardened top section of material, the remaining material was nearly useless as it was full of gritty particles. Wasted $35.

product varies some from tub to tub. I am restoring a window for the first time and didn’t know how much I would need. I ended up having three single quarts delivered over three weeks. First one was a just little dryish. The second one smooth and easy. The third had dried s little on the top and had hard bits… but it was just a top skin and the rest was great. All were easily within the six month use by recommendation and did the job great.

Needed to re-glaze mid-century metal casement windows and this worked perfectly. Nice consistency -- didn't need any whiting and was not too thick or dry. My windows haven't looked this good in decades since someone did a terrible job of attempting to fix them with some other, improper product.

Hi –The directions on my container of Metal Sash Putty say to mix the contained oils into the one quart of putty; first thing. There were no oils in my container; only a drier putty that would not adhere well to the metal, glass, or itself as I worked it. I could find no “use by date” on the container or labels. But wait; the safety and directions label on the container says “500 Wood Sash Putty”. We will see how it looks after the typical dry time of 4 – 6 weeks.Chuck

Ordered a quart so I would have enough, glad I did. Putty was 50% hard and unable to use. Very disappointed.

I applied the putty with a putty knife occasionally dipping the knife into a cup of alcohol to keep the putty from sticking to the knife. The putty stuck well to the aluminum frame. I'll wait a few days before attempting to paint it.

CRL or CR Laurence is a very large supplier of wholesale glass and glazing supplies, tools, and equipment. Their house brand of glazing putty is the very best there is. Metal sash putty is designed for steel sash and expands and contracts at the same rate as the metal whereas wood sash putty does not. Metal sash putty is hard to come by except at Amazon. Steel sash also requires a setting bead of caulk between the glass and the metal and the use of special wire clips to hold the glass in place. It is gray in color. The use of regular sash putty on metal windows will stick out like a sore thumb.
