Like most of society, Lenina and Bernard live happy and promiscuous lives with the help of a drug called Soma. John, considered a savage, lives on a reservation free from conditioning but subject to emotions, disease and violence. Fascinated by John s capacity for emotion and his intolerance for their shallow society, Lenina teaches her students about emotions. This forces John to call her in for discipline, but when she tells him that she is pregnant with his child and intends to have it naturally, he releases her to a reservation to have the baby. The realization that his life is empty without Lenina leaves Bernard conflicted. Will he leave behind everything he has ever known and escape to an all but forgotten way of life?

Adequate adaptation
Now that I think of it, Brave New World can't be easy to adapt for the screen - and for the very reason it's such a good book. It's way too thoughtful. So, they added a bad guy and a murder plot. And they put a more positive spin on the downer of an ending. And the partying scenes (remember these people like to party) look like Mardi Gras in a disco. And goateed Nimoy comes across as the fiercely intelligent (evidenced by nerdy glasses) and profoundly wise (evidenced by his robes and love beads) leader. Big parts of the original remain, including John's death by paparazzi (decades before Diana's) and his mother's death (which worked into the bad guy's plot), enough for much of the book's original point to survive. It's actually fair entertainment.I could have done without Nimoy's love beads, though.-- wiredweird

Not bad though not what it could or should be
Leonard Nimoy is a bit mechanicalTim Guinee as the savage John Cooper is probably the best part of this filmA film based on the 1931/1932 novel Brave New World as envisaged in 1998 though it has the production qualities of the early 1980sThe film is set in California not London

EXCELLENT re-envisioning of the classic
Book purists will hate it, but as I read the old book, it constantly reminded me of how we are living in the brave new world environment today. So, this update matching the old novel to typical modern perspectives was really cool to me. It did a fine job of displaying the messages and making the new morality seem more normal, just like the novel. There's main things missing like not everyone in each class is an identical looking clone - but that part is probably what keeps this book from ever getting made into a real movie anyway. Forgivable and isn't needed in this take. If you can open your mind and allow some leeway, you can find this to be an excellent, albiet updated version of the original story. The BLU RAY Looks fine, although not epic HD or anything, it does look cleaner than I was expecting for a Made For TV movie, and is probably equal or slightly better than the DVD version. The original material might have even been in STANDARD DEFINITION, I don't know for sure. But, it is the best version of this lost flick we will probably ever see. The audio seemed fine - it was enjoyable and nothing jumped out as really messed up... I forgot about judging the audio and just enjoyed the movie - which I see as a good thing.I gave it five stars because I am happy they finally decided to burn copies for us, and it looked better than I was expecting.... but, my expectations were pretty low for a low budget, TV movie. Happy with the purchase!

Not like the book
I love the book. I teach the book. I love the movie. I teach the movie. Check out Roger Paden's "Ideology and Anti-Utopia" for further clarification. When the movie is different from the book for intelligent reasons, this is success. My only problem with this film is that is incorrectly cites Shakespeare's words, but I point this out to students and allow them to join in with the few of us who know the difference.

Video interesting. No Captions. Box Screen.
The movie is interesting. There are no Captions, which I really like. Also, be aware, the Blu-ray version is box screen. The graphics themselves are good quality. I would buy it again as I wanted this video but they could have at least provided captions.

Really good movie
I thoroughly enjoyed this movie and it's characters. I had a completely different perception and mental image when reading the book but wasn't disappointed.

Not your Huxley clone
A completely different vision of Huxley's dystopia. Darker, more immediate and scarier. Set in a closer future and the characters are more real and more modern. Excellent sets and effects!

A little disappointed.
I've been searching for this title for years and was very happy it was finally available. I had seen bits and pieces of the movie over the years and thought it was interesting. But I had not seen it all the way thru before. Now that I have, the movie doesn't seem as enthralling. Aside from the lack of entertainment value, I did find the story line valuable from a sociological study viewpoint. I would still recommend watching the movie. But I wouldn't expect to entertain friends with it.

A movie using ideas in the book. Not a film of the book.
This should not be seen as a movie of the book. Today, the book (although innovative in its time) may well appear dated now and overshadowed (copied?) by other works. No, this film attempts to be an updated story based on the ideas in the book. As such, it really is not that bad and you can see other movies using its ideas (e.g The Island ).

Brave New Worlds didn't loose it's punch
Very interesting! I liked the book and found this a bit different, but the whole idea was there. The acting was believable and the sets where brilliant! An update to original review....On second viewing, dvd buzzed loudly....picture broke up froze then nothing????(Other dvd's play without buzzing etc.) I re-ordered 'Brave New World' and upgraded from 4 to 5...very entertaining great sets!!

Un film che non si fa vedere
Non sono riuscita a vederlo. Mi chiede il "codice regionale". Ho provato a cambiare lettore ma non lo leggeva lo stesso. Stessa richiesta : codice regionale.

This attempt is good, if somewhat slow paced
It's difficult to transfer "Brave New World" to film, as the book is preachy. This attempt is good, if somewhat slow paced. Still, worth watching. dgp
