Pat Metheny's 1999 duo collaboration with Jim Hall, whom Metheny has called the "father of modern guitar playing," features 17 tracks reissued for the first time on Nonesuch-original tunes from each guitarist, several improvisations captured in the studio, plus six tunes recorded live in concert, including Gershwin's "Summertime." "The excellence of the playing is the heart of the matter," says the Philadelphia Inquirer. "It's a privilege to listen in." The Los Angeles Times calls it "extraordinary."

Great Guitar Collaboration
This is a really beautiful partnership between these two Jazz Guitar masters. The music provides a peaceful, introspective ambiance. It merits 5 stars.

soft as summer rain
this cd reminds me of when i get up early in the morning and try to be quiet while everyone else in the house is still sleeping..there is a special peacefulness about the very beginning of the day, when the sun is just coming up, that reminds me of the sweet vibe on this cd.. the entire release is like listening to a brook flow through the woods or a gentle breeze blow the leaves in the summer.the playing is excellent and the arrangements are very nice. since i have been a fan of both metheny and hall for years i am pleased to recommend this cd to any of you who like soft and/or acoustic jazz.

Stellar Guitar Duo
The minute Jim Hall begins playing on the opening cut, it becomes clear why Pat Metheny considers him a major influence. I had no idea this influence was so obvious! The two guitarists match each other with tone and phrasing in perfect synchrony. There is a sweet, dreamy mood that is captured throughout the entire album. A guitar players delight!

Music of artful desire
Feeling like the easiness and simplicity is flowing through the fingers but you can visualize the perfectness of the two masters full of art and skill. The hardest of all is this perfection hidden behind the plain notes.

I love both of these guys, but.......
I'm a jazz guitarist and huge fan of both Pat Metheny and Jim Hall. Pat has made no secret of the fact that Jim was one of his greatest influences. Hearing that the two were going to make an album together, in a cross-generational summit, was something that I had to hear. I was very moved by the sort of father and son concept of it all. Of course, both guys play great, as you'd expect. As a listening experience, you find that the two are both utilizing a very similar, dark, introspective tone....the 1970's signature Jim Hall tone. This bothers me because the combined texture is pretty muddy and without great definition. For my taste, they blur far too much into each other. Don't get me wrong, I get the tone, I've always dug it when Jim used it, but who is to say that it was a good concept to have two guitarist on a duet album doing a clone-tone? For me, it seems a bit too much like Pat paying homage to his hero and not really being true to himself, using the much more transparent sound that we historically associate with him (sans chorus and delay, please). Had Pat been more true to his sonic identity, I feel that the album would have been a much better listening experience. With all that said, on a playing level, it won't disappoint. As a guitarist, myself, it's fascinating to hear how two guitarists play off each other. It's an album that will stay in my collection as a jazz guitar duet reference. In my opinion, this is not a first, second, or third purchase for either of these men. Hey, did I mention that I absolutely worship the ground that these guys walk on?
