Good for power outages, update to original review
I'm updating my original review because I just spent the last 2 1/2 days without electricity due to a huge and nasty summer storm. I happily and safely used my little lights throughout this time. I don't like using candles because I have family members who aren't the most careful and I would worry about fires starting with candles lit around the house all night. And you aren't supposed to use candles when you sleep anyway. So I just love these great little lights. I'd recommend them to everyone. Now, please realize, they aren't made for rough and tumble, they are a little delicate, made of light plastic and not the strongest manufacture. But they work very well if placed around the house or carried around to light your way. They give plenty of light using 4 AA batteries. For around $5 each they do great. I think they are a pretty good deal. If one breaks, they are inexpensive enough to replace easily. Below is my original review. We don't have power outages very often but I got them for this purpose. I live in a townhouse with 3 floors. I keep one on each floor. I am actually purchasing 3 more so that we have 2 on each floor. We had some power loss this last winter during a huge snow storm. The lights worked great during that time. They light up very well and its easy to read by them especially if the electricity is out for a long time. Also since they run on batteries its easy to keep them going. They are definitely NOT for rough going. I wouldn't use them on a camping trip but I would keep one in my car just in case I need a light. Not a bad deal for the price.

Two of Three Worked
You get what you pay for. These little lanterns are great, even if fragile. Given the price, I expected problems from the outset. My expectations were met: Two worked great; one didn't work at all. I think that is okay, all in all. I won't return them, because it wouldn't be worth the hassle, and I'm satisfied with two working units for the price. I'd buy it again.

Trash
I ordered two sets of these to use at a small yard party. Three out of the six arrived non-functional. One was missing the entire light socket, although it rattled pretty good. The other two just didn't turn on at all. Of the remaining three, two would only turn on with the switch 'just so', and would flicker off when moved. Literally. One worked fine...for the length of the party...then it died. No, it wasn't the batteries; they all three got fresh batteries and not one of them worked the next day. The amount of light they put out was similar to a fading solar path light, hardly enough to illuminate the table where they sat. This was a colosal waste of money, time and energy. Think: cheap, thin-plastic gumball toys.

practicality
For the money I haven't seen a better product for household use during a blackout. While they aren't sturdy enough for camping trips, they are ideal for indoor lighting. Their weight and size are perfect for shelves and book cases as well as end tables. The handles enable 4-5 of them to be carried at one time, ideal for quick placement around the house when Edison fails--- which it does A LOT where I live. They don't seem to drain the 4 AA batteries as quickly as some other lanterns do, which is a real plus during an outage which lasts for more than 4 hours.

Good Not Great
I have been prepping for any unknown disaster for the past two years. From anything to a winter or summer storm with days long power outage to an Earthquake or terrorist strike. I have a variety of emergency lighting sources and when I saw this set of three I thought they might make a nice addition to my collection. Well, that last sentence was Key. They make an ADDITION to the collection.First of all they are smaller than I thought when I first saw them on Amazon. They are made of lightweight plastic. The large sticker on the bottom indicates they are Made in Chine (of course). The bottom of the lanterns have a screw on base that houses 4 AA batteries (not included). The base of the lamp has a switch knob that has the off position in the middle and an "on" button on either side of the off position. Why there are 2 on positions I don't know as these are identical in function. At first I thought one of the "on" buttons would be an automatic sensor on but NO. It is simply just an additional on button. The lamps are easy to carry as they have a kind of ergonomic handle at the top. The bottom base is nice and flat so they won't tip over easily. The brightness is good. I would say that one lamp in the pack of three would light a 20`x15' room sufficiently. I was curious how long the light would stay on consistently. I put 4 AA batteries in one lamp and turned it on and set it in my dark guest bathroom. The lamp stayed bright for 10 hours and then died. The batteries I had used were brand new Energizer brand batteries. I put new batteries in a second lamp. This one stayed bright for 9 hours. In conclusion, as I stated at the top of this review, the lamps are a fine, inexpensive addition to emergency lighting. They don't get hot to the touch so they would be really good to give to your kids while they are play camping out in the backyard or during a sleepover. They would not be good in a real camping situation in my opinion. I plan on keeping mine and storing them without the batteries inside so the batteries don't corrode and will certainly take them out during the next power outage. Could these be better? Yes. But I have certainly seen and owned worse.

The price tells all
If you're looking for toy lanterns for the kids, these are them. Other than that, spend some more money. These are cheap toys that work and put out a little light but that's what I expected. Flimsy, cheap, typical overseas construction so very befitting of the price. These are not camping lanterns. These make great little night lights for the kids. One of them already stopped working after a month so keep that in mind depending on what you need them for.
