IRWIN VISE-GRIP Convertible Snap Ring Pliers, 6-1/2-Inch (2078900)

Yesterday I was going to write a bad review bcuz the pin on the pliers were too long n slim causing the snap ring to twist after applying too much force that caused it to stick out one end n require an insane ft/lbs to push off the pliers , after two days and a 3 man team mechanic the tool could not get the ring seated , but turns out the ring was was special for the AC compressor magnetic coil behind the pulley , it had a oval outer shape that was designed to bend n flex , turns out the length of the pin was perfect to accommodate this design flex n after realizing all I needed to do was counter twist the ring against the direction it turned to straighten n expanded the ring perfectly straighten it self , turns out the tool is well made, n the mechanics were just inexperienced n weren’t needed

They'll easily do most jobs. They can be frustrating at times because they aren't that solid so the tension from the snap ring can easily snap them out of place so it may take a few tries to get the snap ring off, but you'll get it eventually. I pushed them for a bigger job and I did slightly bend one of the small prongs.

It does the job, but the removable tips come off very easily while in use and it can be an issue if someone is working on an open engine. I used them to modify a high-end door lock while working on a table so there was no danger of dropping the ring I needed to remove in some places where it would be hard to recover, but I would never use them if working on an engine bay. They are cheap but for critical work is better to spend more and get the fixed tip ones.

After reading the reviews I was a little skeptical about how these would work. I did experience the reported issue with the lateral movement of the jaws due to the middle spring pivot. But taking a tip from a video on replacing that middle pin with a small bolt and nut, that issue is no more and worked out quite well. It’s no big deal changing the various heads on this either way. I’ve used it a few times with good success, no breakages, and happy with the results. The price is excellent for the tool.

These seem to be good. Easy changing the sizes. Nice to know you have two sizes, and one tool will do internal and external. You can also get replacement tips. That is a big thing for me.

The Irwin brand has always produced tools with quality in mind and these snap ring pliers are no exception, I was skeptical of going with the "convertible" style snap rings because I've seen some pretty flimsy ones in the past, however I have to say that I think the design is genius! Using a single push button to change the tips, you simply compress the spring until you've got enough room for the little slide in back to be free enough to turn and make it flush with the rod it's attached to, then the head slides right off, that's versatility for ya, saving space in the garage, the tips that actually grab the rings are machined very precisely so no worrying about whether they will work for the tiny fine rings, although I will admit I haven't used them for any heavy duty applications like automotive yet..

Work fine for light jobs, but they’re not the most heavy-duty option out there. They get the job done for smaller projects, but for tougher snap rings, they can feel a bit flimsy. The convertible feature is handy, but the mechanism could be smoother. Overall, they’re okay for occasional use but might not hold up to heavy-duty tasks.

It was the perfect tool for the job. I needed to replace a snap ring on a hose reel. Saved me a lot of time and money. With multiple ends it has the perfect end for any type of ring.
