why is this not good for potted roses, I have 3 in the largest pots Walmart has, will that make a difference?

Apparently, the drainage is not good enough. The chemicals may settle and become too concentrated, harming the roots. Here's how the company answered a related question: "Unfortunately, the 2 in 1 Rose & Flower Care granules are only for use on plants grown outdoors in the soil. We do not recommend applying to potted plants as the fertilizer may settle and harm the root system. We do however have a product that may be used in potted plants called Plant Food Plus Insect Control Plant Spikes."

I live in southern ca. can i still use this now?

You may apply the product as long as your plants are actively growing and you are not expecting frost for the next 6 weeks.
