An All-Original Science Fiction Masterpiece from Christopher Nolan, and His Most Underrated Film YetChristopher Nolan presented us with yet another masterpiece, that only a brilliant mind like his is capable of. The amount of sophistication and attention to detail in this movie is uncanny, and Nolan brings us hope once again that an action blockbuster can challenge the intelligence of its audience. The film is for sure very complicated and requires more than one viewing in order to begin to understand it (a few analyses and illustrations reviewing online might be required as well), but that only makes it a grander achievement from Nolan's side that managed to create a movie so sophisticated and original, that yet at the bottom line everything in it still aligns perfectly and makes complete sense (kinda like Inception).I remember sitting in the theater watching it for the first time thinking I understood it alright, but once a certain scene (involving the colours red and blue and a turnstile) came I figured I probably don't understand it at all, and just enjoyed the experience ("Don't try to understand it; Just feel it"). The second time i watched the movie I came prepared, and once I truly understood everything (or at least, most of it) i figured what a brilliant story and what a unique film it is, and how Nolan just outsmarted himself once again and created something i'm not sure any other director would have been capable of.In the technical side, i think everyone would agree this movie is a triumphant achievement. The Cinematography, Visual Effects, Production Design, etc. are all top notch. Got to give some respect to editor Jennifer Lame, it must have been a real challenge to edit a film of this type. The highlight though must be Ludwig Göransson’s musical score, that is nothing short of a masterpiece in my opinion. A non stop intense and aggressive electronic celebration, that elevates the film to another level and works brilliantly as a listen outside the film as well.The movie came out in an awful time that, in part, prevented it from being a sensation like Inception and Interstellar has been back in their day. That and, of course, the fact this movie is nothing short of an investment, that requires the viewer to watch it at least 2-3 times to fully comprehend. I believe and hope in the future Tenet will get some more of the respect it deserves, and might even take the path of films like Fight Club and many others that were panned on release but became cult classics afterwards.Personally I love this film tremendously and highly recommend it. I don’t think anyone else besides Christopher Nolan, the guy that has Inception on his resume, could have provided us with a film like this. I consider Tenet as a triumph in the Science Fiction genre, and one of the most entertaining, most original and most unique entires in that genre.This steelbook looks glorious and totally worthy for a movie of its caliber- Nolan brings hope for the future of cinema once more and its a very worthy edition to celebrate this achievement. The 4K quality looks amazing, of course.

A co-production between the United Kingdom and the United States, it stars John David Washington, Robert Pattinson, Elizabeth Debicki, Dimple Kapadia, Michael Caine, and Kenneth Branagh. The plot follows a secret agent (Washington) as he manipulates the flow of time to prevent World War III.Nolan took more than five years to write the screenplay after deliberating about Tenet's central ideas for over a decade. Pre-production began in late 2018, casting in March 2019, and principal photography lasted three months in Denmark, Estonia, India, Italy, Norway, the United Kingdom, and the United States, from May to November. Cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema shot on 70 mm and IMAX. Scenes of time manipulation were filmed both backwards and forwards. Upwards of one hundred vessels and thousands of extras were used.Delayed three times because of the COVID-19 pandemic, Tenet was released in the United Kingdom on August 26, 2020, and United States on September 3, 2020, in IMAX, 35 mm, and 70 mm. The film received generally favourable reviews from critics on Metacritic, with Rotten Tomatoes saying it had "all the cerebral spectacle audiences expect from a Christopher Nolan production."Plot (WARNING MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS)A CIA agent, the "Protagonist", participates in an undercover operation at a Kyiv opera house. His life is saved by a masked soldier with a red trinket, who "un-fires" a bullet through a hostile gunman. After seizing an artefact, the Protagonist is captured by mercenaries. He endures torture before consuming cyanide. He awakens to learn that the cyanide was a test of his loyalty; his team has been killed, and the artefact lost.The Protagonist joins a secret organization called Tenet. A scientist shows him bullets with "inverted" entropy, which allows them to move backwards through time. She believes that they are manufactured in the future, and a weapon exists that can wipe out the past. Aided by a local contact Neil, the Protagonist traces the bullets to arms dealer Priya Singh. He discovers that she is a member of Tenet; her cartridges were purchased and inverted by Russian oligarch Andrei Sator.The Protagonist approaches Sator's estranged wife Kat, an art appraiser, who authenticated a Goya drawing forged by a man named "Arepo", which Sator thereafter purchased for $9 million from Arepo; Sator uses the drawing to blackmail her and keep her under his control. The three go boating, and Kat attempts to drown Sator, but the Protagonist saves him. The Protagonist offers to help Sator retrieve a case, which, he says, contains Plutonium-241. In Tallinn, the Protagonist and Neil ambush an armoured convoy and steal the case, which contains the artefact lost in Kyiv. They are ambushed by an inverted Sator, who holds Kat hostage. The Protagonist gives Sator an empty case, and he retreats. The Protagonist saves Kat but is captured and taken to Sator's warehouse.The inverted Sator shoots Kat with an inverted round, while the normal Sator demands the location of the artefact; the Protagonist gives him false information. Tenet operatives led by Ives rescue the Protagonist while Sator escapes. The group take Kat through Sator's turnstile to invert her, reversing the effect of the round. The Protagonist returns to the ambush site and chases Sator. His vehicle is overturned, and Sator sets it on fire; the Protagonist is saved by Ives' team again. In a "temporal pincer movement", red team troops move forward in time, while the blue team troops move backward. The Protagonist and Ives are aided by a masked corpse of a blue-team trooper with a red trinket on his backpack after seeing him dying in reverse. In Vietnam, Kat boards Sator's yacht and kills him, as the Protagonist and Ives secure the algorithm.The Protagonist, Neil, and Ives break up the algorithm and part ways. The Protagonist notices the trinket on Neil's rucksack. Neil reveals that he was recruited by the Protagonist years in the future and that this mission is the end of a long friendship. Priya attempts to have Kat assassinated, but is killed by the Protagonist, who has realized that he is the future mastermind behind Tenet.I always love a Nolan movie from Memento to Dunkirk and now Tenet. On the first watch, you may get a little lost but this will only bring you back another time and realize how simple the story really is.

The movie arrived in perfect condition and promptly, fulfilling the pre-order terms.As for the movie itself, it is a masterpiece of storytelling and action. A callback to the times of old where style, scenery and scale were hallmarks in spy thriller escapades. The casting was superb and daring, each captivating in their roles. The score perhaps the only disappointment, not being bad on any level and thoroughly enjoyable but left me intrigued to wonder what Zimmerman would have come up with to fit the movie's theme much like the excellent Inception score.For most the story will require more than one playthrough to truly grasp the intricacies expertly woven from start to end.Where it inevitably and often unfavorably will be compared to Nolan's previous works by those far less appreciative of the excellent dynamics, don't let that or them put you off in any way. Each of Nolan's personal works explores the wonder of the nature of time itself and he is careful not to retread or revisit paths he has walked before. Tenet is no exception but rather stands as a far more direct venture into his passion and fascination with time.Ironically the movies only Achilles heel was it's timing as this year's upheaval placed undue expectations on it and also never allowed it the be promoted as it deserved.Hopefully now it is available for direct release it will find appreciation in viewers although they will likely never again get the opportunity to be impacted by the intended iMAX presentation it was made for.This has easily become one of the best films I have seen in recent times. And hopes it will welcomed by many more, for "posterity".

This was a great little special edition that has an entire second disc filled with special features. Highly recommend for the collector who wants behind the scenes.

Un film molto bello.A volte un po' complicato o difficile da comprendere per i livelli temporali, ma comunque divertente.

Als Einleitung möchte ich erwähnen, dass ich ein großer Fan von Science Fiction- und generell von "Zeitreise"-Filmen bin. Egal, ob Mega-Blockbuster oder kleine Indie-Produktion. Ebenfalls gefallen mir auch eher "schräge" Filme, wie z.B. David Lynch sie früher so gern gedreht hat. (Mulholland Drive, Lost Highway, Twin Peaks....) Und auch die Filme von Christopher Nolan gefallen mir grundsätzlich wirklich gut. (Ich wünschte, er würde mal wieder "kleine" Filme wie "Memento" drehen...immer noch mein Nolan-Lieblingsfilm. Gedreht mit nem Budget von 9 million USD!)Warum also konnte „Tenet“ bei mir nicht richtig punkten?Simple Antwort: Der Film hat wirklich eine gewaltige Bildsprache, teils grandiose Actionsequenzen, gute bis sehr gute schauspielerische Leistungen, eine interessante Hintergrund-Idee ABER trotz einer immensen Lauflänge wird hier nur eine sehr dünne Geschichte mit teils recht großen Logikfehlern bzw. Plotlöchern erzählt.Dazu kommt das bereits im Vorfeld schon oft kritisierte Sounddesign. Der Film ist schlichtweg zu laut. Ich schaue Filme generell in der englischen Originalversion und musste in so einigen Szenen zum ersten Mal in meinem Film-Leben Untertitel einschalten, weil ich die Schauspieler schlichtweg einfach nicht verstanden habe. Wer also schon Probleme hatte, Bane in „The Dark Knight Rises“ zu verstehen, wird hier erst recht enttäuscht sein. Angeblich hat Nolan in Bezug auf diese Kritik so argumentiert, dass er das bewusst getan hätte, damit die Zuschauer sich mehr auf die Unterhaltungen konzentrieren bzw. seiner Meinung nach ist auch die Sprache im Film ein künstlerisches Stilmittel, welches er so einsetzen kann, wie er Lust hat. Tja...mag ja sein. Angenehm ist es für den Zuschauer, der gut unterhalten werden möchte, dennoch nicht.Ich möchte nun noch etwas ins Detail gehen...nach wie vor natürlich spoilerfrei:Die Schauspieler bzw. die schauspielerischen Leistungen haben mir gut gefallen. Besonders Robert Pattinson stielt anderen Darstellern in so einigen Szenen die Show und erweitert sein filmisches Repertoire mehr und mehr. Man darf auf „The Batman“ gespannt sein. Ebenfalls gefallen hat mir John David Washington. Er zeigt wie auch sein Vater eine tolle Präsenz vor der Kamera und mir hat sein zurückhaltendes Schauspiel sehr gefallen. Es wurde oft kritisiert, dass sein Filmcharakter ja keine wirkliche Hintergrundgeschichte hätte und nicht mal einen Namen...mir hat aber genau das gut gefallen. Es passt einfach extrem gut in die ganze Geschichte und ich konnte mich dadurch sogar mehr mit seinem Charakter identifizieren. Elizabeth Debicki überragt mit ihren 1,90m nicht nur die meisten anderen Darsteller sondern überzeugte mich auch schauspielerisch. Sie legt ihre Rolle hier gleichzeitig stark wie zerbrechlich an und gibt ihrer Figur wesentlich mehr Tiefe als ich zu Anfang erwartet hatte.Auch die restliche Schauspieleriege gibt sich keine Blöße.Die Action ist wie gesagt teils grandios und wird von der Kamera gut eingefangen. Überhaupt hat mir die Kamera-Arbeit in diesem Film gut gefallen und es ist faszinierend, wie die gleichzeitig vorwärts wie rückwärts laufenden Szenen gedreht wurden. Wirklich klasse.Der Sound...tja. Der ist grundsätzlich gut und macht auch vollen Gebrauch von allen Surround-Kanälen. Vor allen Dingen der Bass tritt wie in Nolan-Filmen typisch sehr dominant auf. Wer also die heimische Surround-Anlage mal austesten will...viel Spaß mit einerseits dem Film und andererseits den Nachbarn, die man dann ziemlich schnell kennenlernen wird. ;-) ABER dennoch war mir wie gesagt der Film einfach zu laut. Musik, Explosionen, generell die Umgebungsgeräusche...in vielen Szenen sind Unterhaltungen der Schauspieler kaum zu verstehen. Das geht für mich gar nicht. (Und ich war sehr, sehr konzentriert bei der Sache!)Abschließend zum für mich größten Minuspunkt des Films: die Story. Hier wird das Rad leider nicht neu erfunden. Ganz und gar nicht. Ohne Spoiler kann ja locker gesagt werden, dass es hier grundsätzlich um ein Zeitparadoxon (eigentlich mehrere) bzw. das sogenannte Großvaterparadoxon geht. Ok. Nicht schlecht. So etwas interessiert mich ja pauschal. ABER Nolan kann es einfach nicht wirklich fesselnd oder auf neuartige Art und Weise erzählen. Der Film endet nach 150 Minuten, alles ist mehr oder weniger aufgelöst und ich dachte mir: Wie? Das war's jetzt? An dieser Stelle wollte ich Christopher Nolan am liebsten darauf hinweisen, dass viele Filme diese Thematik besser bzw. „verrückter“ oder spannender erzählt haben. Man muss sich nur die ersten beiden Terminator-Filme anschauen und weiß, was ich meine. Oder erinnert sich noch jemand an „12 Monkeys“ mit Bruce Willis? (Aus dem Jahr 1996) Das waren Filme, bei denen sich mein Gehirn verdreht hat, wenn ich über die Sache mit der Zeit nachgedacht habe. Und genau hier scheitert Nolan leider. Zwar nicht komplett, denn auch „Tenet“ ist durchaus sehenswert und gewinnt auch beim zweiten oder dritten Anschauen noch etwas...aber unter dem Strich bleibt er hinter vielen anderen Filmen mit ähnlicher Thematik zurück. Und das ist sehr schade für einen solchen Blockbuster mit entsprechend großem Budget. Der „Spionage“ bzw. „Agenten“-Anteil des Films braucht sich durchaus nicht hinter James Bond oder Jason Bourne zu verstecken. Hier wird schnell klar, dass Nolan ein Fan solcher Filme ist. Ich fände es sogar wünschenswert, wenn Nolan mal einen Bond-Film drehen würde.Abschließendes Fazit: für Filmfans und vor allen Dingen Fans von Science Fiction-/Zeitreise-/Spionage-/Action-Filmen durchaus sehenswert. Allerdings würde ich die Erwartungen vor dem ersten Anschauen etwas runterschrauben und vielleicht auch warten, bis die Blu-Ray günstiger wird. Der Film lohnt schon für die eigene Filmsammlung aber nicht zum aktuellen Anschaffungspreis. Und vielleicht sollte man den Film beim ersten Mal mit einem sehr guten Kopfhörer schauen (hören) oder bei einer Surround-Anlage den Center-Speaker verstärken bzw. Bass und Surround-Kanäle etwas runterdrehen. Optisch ist der Film eine Wucht und weiß vom Bild her absolut zu überzeugen. Ich habe ihn in 1080P, durch meinen Player auf 4K hochskaliert, geschaut und war mit dem Bild absolut glücklich.
