Jo Stafford: The Ultimate Capitol Collection

Getting deeper into the American Songbook and all things allied to it, Jo Stafford now comes onstage. Her rendition of Jerome Kern's "Long Ago and Far Away" is one of the great events of 20th Century American culture, a episode where popular song approaches and achieves the stature of German lieder or French melodie. The sound quality here is excellent--or more accurately, even better than we have any reason to expect. Remember, it's all just song, whether Elton John, Fleetwoord Mac, The Eagles, Schubert, Schumann, Kern, or Gershwin--and genuinely thoughtful and expressive interpreters of song are few. Here is a great interpreter of American song. Oh, and btw, Jo also puts a hillbilly voice to sing some novelty tunes. I mean, Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau would probably never have done that, not even on a bet . . .

What a soothing voice. I play it in my truck and complete peace and quiet comes over me. Like music soothing the savage beast. I was in high school in the fifties and remember her voice and loved it even back then and much more now. Highly reccomeded . I also reccomend the Old rugged cross album

I'm especially fond of this singer. My French aunt was a governess to her children, so I have a personal interest in her music. There are too many corny, country-like songs for me, but the rest are classic Stafford tunes, so it's well worth the price. There's never been another singer with the kind of voice she has. It's very distinctive and mellow, clear and captivating. I would recommend this album to anyone interested in old standards song to perfection.

Fabulous. Her sound became more beautiful over the years. She and Gordon MacRae have amazing ensemble: pitch, tone, phrasing.I'm a classical pianist. But I appreciate pop from the 50's with elegant orchestral accompaniments.

Jo Stafford a truly great singer and the collection of her songs on this disc is magic.

アメリカ盤の製品の様で、元の音源が古いせいか、時々一瞬音が飛びますが、我慢は出来ます。なによりも、ジョー・スタッフオードの他の盤には入っていない曲を聴くことが出来ます。なにせCD２枚で２７曲×２＝５４曲も入っているのですから。その代わり、代表作である「You belong to me」も「霧のロンドン」も入っていません。しかし、「こんな曲を歌っているのか？」と驚かされもします。

Nothing like the old singers, you can understand every word they sing. Great to listen to.
