KANSAS Freaks Of Nature CD

unmistakable kansas feel.....
Opinion here is...., after the 1970's in witch every Kansas albums is great , except song for America , good not great. There are 2 more great Kansas albums that have that wonderful something that true Kansas has they are ....freaks of nature and the prelude implicit ....., freaks being in the top 4 or 5 best Kansas ever, biggest bummer was somewhere to elsewhere , original line up reunion, wow!!! What a borefest with no guitar or very little, that one really was a complete disappointment. If looking for real great Kansas music buy freaks of nature and prelude implicit they are awesome .

A Pleasant Return to Classic Kansas
Filling the holes in my Kansas collection. I had pretty much written them off after Monolith and figured everything since the 80s was self-parody. But I've learned that's not true. I wish I had purchased some of these when they actually first came out. This disk is a pleasant surprise, actually a return to the Leftoverture/Point of Know Return sound. Not as grandiose, unified, or pure, but in that spirit. The songs are good, the passion is there, and musicianship strong. It's a good CD, and one you should pick up if you thought all the classic Kansas came out before 1990. (Also make sure to buy Somewhere to Elsewhere.)

Fantastic!
Oh my God, how is this album not one of their best sellers? "Freaks of Nature" is fantastic, amazing! This album sounds more like the Kansas of the 70s -- as does "Somewhere to Elsewhere", their 2000 album -- which is a revisit to the classic Kansas sound. In listening to it, I honestly thought I was hearing a Kansas album from the era of "Point of Know Return."Firstly, skip track # 1, "I Can Fly." It's so bad it'll give you nightmares. Afterwards, every single track is amazing."Black Fathom 4" is a rockin' piece, with great harmonies."Need" is a very nice ballad with some good strength to it."Freaks of Nature" -- another rockin' piece."Cold Grey Morning" -- the only piece written by Kerry Livgren, who, by this time, hadn't been with the band for years. It's a wonderful classic prog rock piece. And then there's the last track, "Peaceful and Warm," a true epic written by Steve Walsh. The first half is great prog, with the second half one of the most gorgeous sounds and melodies anyone has ever produced. Ragsdale makes the violin sing beautifully in this song. Pure Heaven. The vocals -- although an element of rasp is there at times, they are for the most part gorgeous. I hardly notice the rasp as I'm enjoying the sound so greatly. The drumming -- well, Phil Ehart is one of the most underrated drummers in all of modern music. The keyboards and guitars and the significant bass -- all superb.I am a Kansas fan going back to the very beginning, having been a tremendous fan of their early work from the 70s, not so much a fan of their 80s violin-free songs (which are more geared to radio play). This album, as I said, sounds like it came right out of the late 70s for Kansas, almost like a sister album to "Point of Know Return."Get it, share it, spread the word. Honest to God, this should be one of their top sellers.

Awesome
I love 'Masque' from 1975 and appreciate the better songs on 'Left overture' and I thought that they would never top 'point of know return' but this 1995 release comes very close. No Kerry Livgren on it though they do play one of his songs (and cold grey morning is magnificent). They employ a second keyboardist and Greg Robert is superb. David Ragsdale moves me with his violin playing and unlike his predecessor the fabulous Robbie he doesn't shred and play like a rock star. David has more finesse and plays longer sweeter notes. Billy Greer plays bass in the Kansas way and is a good backing singer too. The original trio of Ehart, Williams and Walsh are on sparkling form and we are treated to nine marvellous tracks.Walsh's song writing is superb. Songs like 'under the knife' and 'hope once again' are as good as music gets and on first listening are the ones that stick in your brain. There are some heavy rockers on here too. Black fathom 4 is again top notch as is 'I can fly' which I also love. Hell, all the songs are outta this world. Yes, I will say it this album is on a par with P.O.K.R and I prefer it in truth because it is more accessible and less proggy than we have ever known them. The next album saw the return of Robbie and Kerry and it was back to long songs again. Trust me this little known gem ''Freaks of nature'' is Kansas at their very best and that is really saying something. Buy it just buy it. If you get just one Kansas album in your life get this. Describing it as prog rock would actually be an insult.
