Mark Lawrence is a fantastic writer, and never more so than in this short story medium. He writes in the grimdark subgenre of fantasy, which might make one think these short stories are going to be violent and dumb. They are violent, but are in no way stupid. In fact, Lawrence's stories are written with a rare philosophical bent, even while achieving grisly and graphic catharsis.

Great book shaping Lawrence's World even better.

If you enjoyed the Broken Empire books (thorns trilogy and red prince trilogy) you'll love this.A series of shorts that give you a more complete picture of the cast of the world. With some brilliant back stories to the most notable road brothers and a few stories that fill in a few gaps in the timeline for you, as well as a wonderful caper with Prince Jalan, this collection ticked all the boxes of what I love about Lawrences writing.

I like the book. You get to learn more about the characters.
