A bargain, and it works perfectly
At this price I was a bit skeptical about the quality, but it is excellent. Very easy to put in a 500 GB Hitachi SATA drive in just a few minutes. As somebody mentioned, have to be careful not to lose the tiny screws. It looks very good, is cool and silent when working, and it is well planned and thought out.I was pleased to find that it had a long power cord...too often they are too short on other products to reach my power strip or UPS.If I had to find something to complain about, it would be that the blue ON light is a bit too bright, but hey, if that is the worst, it is a great little product.

Failed after less than 1 week
Enclosure is inexpensive and appears solidly made out of aluminum of a thickness to not be flimsy. However, after less than one week plugged into my laptop and sitting safely on my desk, the unit began beeping continuously once per second and would not longer mount to the OS. Removed hard disk from enclosure and verified operation in a desktop computer. The hard disk works, the problem must be with the enclosure. Very disappointed.

Straightforward, high quality external HDD enclosure for SATA drives
I was recycling an old PC computer and thought I'd remove the old internal HDD and use it as a stand-alone drive for my iMac. I had never done something like this before so with a little Internet research I found the essential information I needed: (1) what type of HDD drive I had, (2) what type of enclosed was needed, and (3) what type of connectors were needed on the external HDD enclosure to connect to the iMac.From all the myriad of HDD enclosure cases available, I choose this Adcomdata case because of the positive reviews. Now I can add my own accolades. The case is well made, comes with all the necessary hardware (screws, power/USB cords, stand/feet), and decent instructions. The old PC drive slide right into the SATA connectors. All the pre-drilled assembly screw holes aligned properly for easy case assembly and all the screws were easily inserted. Connected the power cord and USB cable, and Voila! - it mounted on the iMac as a read-only drive. So now I have access to all the old PC files from the iMac without having to transfer them via some other means. When I wish to have another external, writeable Apple-format drive, all I have to do is reformat that drive with Disk Utility. One bit of advice that I found from my Internet research - insert a thin plastic sheet (I used clear packing tape) on the inside of the external case next to the HDD circuit board to prevent inadvertent contact between the case and CB.When I am ready to add a very large external drive to the iMac, I will consider making my own using this enclosure and another, raw HDD. It was that easy.

Good enclosure, works well with Linux & Mac
I originally bought this enclosure to rescue data from the C: drive (640 GiB) of a WinPC with a failed motherboard. Then I reformatted it and hooked it up to an iMAC to use, 24/7, with Apple's Time Machine archive software, and it does very well at this.Setup was a snap - the drive just slid onto a fixed bus and fastened to the tray with 4 screws (included with the enclosure) - took about 10 minutes. The heat is noticeable but not really what I'd call excessive - the aluminum box and vents in both ends give it ample ventilation. Some minor downsides: The blue light on the front panel is a bit too bright - if you use this in a bedroom you may want to cover up the light. Also, unlike portable hard drives, it doesn't take its power from the PC but instead has to use a brick, thus limiting the portability.

Poor quality control
I recently retired my Windows PC with 6 SATA hard drives. I wanted to be able to easily get to old files (some as old as 30 years) that I had stored on the drives. My iMac reads NTFS drives via USB so I decided to purchase one of theses to try.It worked for about an hour then died. No response on the USB port. While it worked, it worked very well so I returned it for replacement and I was quite pleased with the replacement it so I ordered four more.Of this four one had a bad power supply. The unit would start to spin up the drive but then turn off then on then off once a second. I returned the enclosure for replacement. The replacement worked fine and I now had five of the six enclosures I needed.I ordered the sixth. It came in with a dead power supply. I returned it for replacement. The replacement came in with exactly the same power supply problem. I tried the PS on all of the enclosures and it wouldn't work on any of them. I returned it for replacement. The replacement just came. It, too, has a bad power supply. I'm returning it for refund. In my attempt to find 6 good SATA HDD enclosures I have found five and had to return 5-the last one for a refund, not replacement. That is a very high failure rate. Needless to say I won't be ordering one of these enclosures ever again.Update. I purchased the Firewire 400+800, eSATA, USB 2.0 drive enclosure manufactured by Acomdata from a local store. I've been using it on FW800 for several days and it has been working well. The 5 good ones are still working well, so I suspect I would have been quite happy with the enclosures I had to return were it not for bad power supplies.
