Artech House Publishers EW 101: A First Course in Electronic Warfare

This text book gave a great overview into what's happening in Electronic War and how it is done. I liked it. The book provided the analytic formulas to perform gain calculations without being overdependent on the mathematics to understand the basics. The book covered Radar Warning Receivers (RWR) which I'd had no experience with and provided a clear explanation of how they work and what technical parameters are important. I've worked in the industry for a while, but I wished I'd read this 10 years earlier.

This is a good introduction to the topic and a handy reference. I use this book on an almost daily basis for my job.

Book covers EW basics satisfactorily (but only if the reader is well educated in physics and mathematics) but does not present enough material to justify its exorbitant cost. If EW 102 were merged in then it would be a decent value. Another book the reader might substitute for this one, as an introduction to electronic warfare, would be An Illustrated Guide to the Techniques and Equipment of Electronic Warfare . Although more than 30 years old, this affordable book covers EW essentials that have not changed from its inception during WW2. The only really important thing missing in the Guide that is in EW 101 is coverage of spread spectrum technologies. It must be stressed that EW 101 is written for budding EW professionals with prior familiarity with basic EW principles. Other than a terse few paragraphs giving the textbook definitions of the Electronic Attack, Electronic Defense, and Electronic Support missions (the "old" ECM/ECCM/ESM), there is absolutely no introduction to EW concepts. Exactly what "jamming" is, what kinds there are, and their differences are not explained other than the dense math equations presented. Beginners and laypersons interested in finding out what EW is about will be absolutely befuddled by this book. Do check out the recommended Guide for a comprehensible overview of EW topics. One last thing that irritates me is that what is now called "Electronic Support Measures" was back in my day called "Electronic SURVEILLANCE Measures". They shouldn't have changed it because the word "support" doesn't really mean anything concrete. As with doing away with the traditional terms ECM and ECCM, it's just more confusion injected into an already esoteric subject. We are getting too geeky with this, people!
