WAY deeper than Rom-Com
This book stunned me with its beauty.[spoiler warning]Olive is a young woman coping with the trauma of her father‘s emotional neglect and trying to make sense of his mental illness (bipolar) and the CPTSD symptoms she carries from his inconsistent caregiving. She’s understandably afraid to let him back in her life, and the book is about how she navigates her boundaries, accepts that he couldn’t be the parent she needed, and finds a way to keep what’s good in him while being realistic about the complexities of his illness. She’s also learning how to identify and risk vulnerability with safe people - people who show up better for her, instead of people-pleasing everyone to avoid more rejection… which means she starts getting loved for who she is … which reinforces her growing sense of worthiness and let’s her step more fully into self-acceptance.Truly, it’s a beautiful book - a masterclass.I also have a bipolar parent (like the author), and this story made me feel so seen. It made me cry. More than a little. It was exquisite. The author’s dad, fellow author Richard Paul Evans, is out publicly about his bipolar and known for his Christmas stories, paranoid rants, and posse of loyal fans. A complex being if there ever was one. And the author clearly loves and is devoted to him. (See their FaceBook live interview about the book on his Facebook page ... the elephant in the room: there's no mention of bipolar.)Jenna, if you see this review, thank you. Thank you for your courage. It’s HUGE - what you’ve done here. Incredible you wrote it. Incredible the insights you offer on the impact of mental illness on children. Incredible the grace you offer the characters.I think it’s one of the deepest books I’ve read, and you accomplished it in the young adult genera. And made it beautiful and hopeful.I’m gobsmacked.Thank you, with all my heart.

Jenna's best book yet!
A year ago, I read Love & Gelato in one day. I completely fell in love with the story, the characters and Jenna's writing, so I got really excited to read Love & Luck! When I read it, in over a month, I really enjoyed it, but not nearly as much as the first book. Still, I got pretty excited for Love & Olives. I've been waiting to buy it for some time now, because there's no translated version of it here in Brasil yet. When I finally started reading it, I became completely infatuated with the characters and this gorgeous story! Safe to say it was my favorita Jenna Evans Welch book yet, she is so talented and I admire her very much. This book is sooo worth the read, trust me. I don't normally write reviews but I really wanted to share what an amazing experience it was reading this beautiful story with amazing characters ❤
