Hard, Chewy, and Disappointing. Homemade Churros Win Every Time!
I was attending a neighbor's dinner where the theme was Tacos. I opted to bring dessert: churros with vanilla ice cream. I have never eaten churros before and had no clue how they were made, so I bought this churro mix hoping for an easy shortcut. However, the results were honestly disappointing. The boxed churros came out thick, hard, and chewy with a dense bite that didn’t pair well with ice cream or stand on their own. The inside was softer but the overall texture was heavy, more like a thick breadstick than a delicate pastry. To really test them, I made a batch of churros from scratch the same night. In the photo, the bottom plate shows the boxed churros (noticeably thicker), while the top plate shows the homemade ones. The difference in taste and texture was night and day. The boxed mix is full of shortening, leavening agents, and preservatives designed to increase its shelf life I guess but those additives sacrifice both flavor and texture. In contrast, the homemade churros used just flour, butter, water, eggs, sugar, and salt! The result? A perfectly light and airy inside with a crisp, golden shell that crackles when you bite into it. Rolled in cinnamon sugar, they were everything a churro should be crunchy, fluffy, slightly crumbly, and absolutely dreamy with vanilla ice cream. When I brought both versions to a neighbor dinner, the reaction was unanimous: “Yours are way better!” Everyone agreed that the scratch churros were superior in every way. Here’s the kicker, making them from scratch wasn’t hard at all. People often reach for boxed mixes thinking they’ll save time, but the homemade dough was quick to prepare and so much more rewarding. Bottom line: If you’re craving real churros, skip this mix (and maybe mixes in general). It produces churros that are too hard, chewy, and bland. With a handful of simple pantry ingredients, you can make churros that are bakery quality: crisp on the outside, fluffy inside, and melt-in-your-mouth perfect!! TRUST ME your taste buds (and your guests) will thank you.

Can’t make them if the bag busts!
I’ve used this product for many years and suddenly the bags to make the churros busted wide open. When making the first box, not even half way through, the bag busted. I then had to cannibalize the second bag from the second box to finish. I even reinforced the bag with tape before using it, just in case. The second bag busted too. Now a have the second box with no bag to make them. I’ll just buy a reusable churros maker and make my batter from scratch.
