Magruder grinds hard
The vocals tear into the very fabric of your brain, ripping neurons to shreds while the drums play a merry havoc with your circulatory system, both leave you open to the mountain heavy guitar riffs that collide head on with your poor, screaming nervous system. Yes that’s right you have stumbled on yet another great grindcore album. There has been some good grind as of late; Napalm Death are still going strong with the awesome ‘Apex Predator/Easy Meat’ and Oblivionized ‘Life is a Struggle, Give Up’ which is a brilliant album. Even diehard fans of the genre must admit to being a little surprised at it longevity and consistent quality of albums being released; it is a standard that doesn’t look like it is going to slip for a long time thanks to Magrudergrind. It is fair to say that if you are expecting anything other than a grind album you will be disappointed. Short, sharp, exceedingly brutal (but groovy) shocks are the order of the day here. The ‘point’ is never skirted around, it is slammed in your face before moving relentlessly onwards, asking for more would be to misunderstand what it is you are being presented with.Highlights of this intensely destructive cluster bomb of an album include: ‘The Opportunist’ who’s drums smash your brains in in gloriously furious rhythmic maelstroms. ‘Sacrificial Hive’ has an addictive groove which breaks through even amongst the chaos. ‘Stale Affairs’ judders and lurches around like a crazed, dribbling squirrel while ‘Unit 731’ starts off slow and menacing before exploding into disgusting life, though watch for the intro that, unintentionally I am sure, sounds like a certain Slipknot song (don’t lynch me it does). At sub 24 minutes this album is Grind perfection and demands multiple listening sessions back to back.
