What is the width (jaw depth) on the 10, 12, and 14 inch straight-pipe wrench?

According to the Ridgid full line catalogue Vol 9.0, the pipe capacity of the 10 inch straight-pipe wrench is a 1 1/2 inch pipe which has an OD of 1.900 inch. The 12" and 14" have a capacity of 2" pipe which has an OD of 2.375 inches. No where in the catalogue are the actual physical dimensions of the jaws listed. I never gave it much thought. 2 " pipe is about the largest anyone would want to wrestle by hand, and if you cannot break a joint with a 14" wrench you grab the 18" If you need anything longer than a 24" you are in over your head. Call a pro.

How wide is the max open?

There will a forged scale marked on the adjustable jaw. The marked maximum open was 2 inch while you can still play with it if the object is a little bit larger.

How does this work? It didn't come with instructions and I can't seem to get the "jaws" to lock in on anything.

Press the top black push button to adjust the size needed for the pipe you are working on. Mine works great... watch on you tube.

Why does the adjustment knob leave behind black residue?

The black spray painting on the adjustment knob may leave some stains after use. This should be normal and not affect it's corrosion-resistance feature.
