Gunnison River Simple Fly Tying Kit

This is very poor stuff, particularly the vise. It is not well thought out, either. why start someone with such hooks? Poor choice of materials as well. The smaller tools are ok, but that's about it. I bought it as a gift for the son of a friend and I was so upset by how poorly suited it was for learning fly-tying that I went on-line and bought a better vise of about 25 bucks, and gave him a bunch of my own hooks and materials. I am a lifelong fly fisherman, and not a particularly fussy or cheap guy with unrealistic expectations. This is a huge waste of money. I suggest you do a little research and get a decent beginner vise from a known manufacturer and then add scissors, a whip finisher, and hackle pliers (get the plastic ones with the little push button hooks in the tip instead of the metal ones like in this kit; they are much cheaper and work much better), then get some streamer and nymph hooks and start researching some simple flies and how to tie them for a start.

I'm new to fly fishing and fly tying. I was worried that this kit wouldn't be good enough or have what I need, even as a beginner. Remember, at this point, I'm not interested in expensive pro level fly stuff. I was looking for something cheap on purpose to see if I wanted to jump in the deeper end of the pool later on. This kit fit the bill perfectly. I have no complaints. In fact, I am quite impressed with everything I received for the small price. Granted, I know I'll probably want to upgrade some stuff down the road when my tastes start becoming more targeted and refined, but for what I'm doing right now, this is a perfect kit. Highly recommend it for someone in my circumstances. Oh, and by the way, I applaud the kit creators for NOT including an instructional DVD. I don't want to pay more for something that is free on YouTube. Thanks for help us consumers keep costs low for entry-level hobby exploration.

This kit seems to have been hastily put together by that uncle who wanted to give you a gift but had no clue what to get! The vice is of sub par pot metal and matches in no way the pictures in the book that was with the kit (4 pages). The directions are incomplete and the random supplies are not either. Save your money!!!

Vise is absolutely JUNK. If you buy this you will definitely be buying a new vise. Kit isn't bad for other tools and some starter material. Instruction booklet is terrible as well but thankfully there are endless YouTube tutorials out therem

Don’t waste your time or money. I was really excited for this as a Christmas gift for my fiancé. Sadly it didn’t last long. It’s Nice little starter kit except the clamp to hold the fly broke the first time used!! The supplies in the rest of the kit were decent for the price.

Its an excellent beginners kit. has all tools and materials needed to ty numerous patterns. I got it for a quick replacement kit for a trip. All my stuff "disappeared" and i was dead in the water. it workred well for a carry around kit..

This is a great, cheap way to see if you like tying flies. The material included will tie many more flies than it says as long as you provide hooks. The vice has held up after hundreds of flies. The scissors came sharp and the materials themselves are decent. The book is useless but that is what the internet is for

Nice case and surplus I thought the vice would have been a little nicer but over all a good starter kit
