About the Startup Describe your product in 3 words.Making Ears HappierHow did you come up with the idea for this product?We are a physician-engineer team who met at Stanford University and became interested in solving this problem. When we saw there were no good solutions for ear cleaning at home, we decided to research why and how people currently clean their ears and then started Clear Ear to help develop better ear cleaning solutions that fit each earwax type. Oto-Tip is a product of many interviews, where people shared with us that ear cleaning is a habit for them. For some, its been a habit for many years. Some do it to remove their wax in order to feel clean, some to remove the water in their ears after a shower, and others just purely cause it feels good. One interviewer commented, “Why would I stop one of most enjoyable parts of my day?”. It’s not that people aren’t aware of the dangers of digging things deep into their ears, but that they’re frustrated with a lack of alternative options for cleaning other than “don’t do it”. If I am going to do it, then what can I use without causing problems?What makes your product special?Oto-Tip was designed based on the knowledge that the ear is self-cleaning. For those who have a normal level of ear wax and have been cleaning their ears daily or haven’t gotten in the habit of waiting for the wax to come out on its own, we know it’s hard to quit cleaning your ears cold turkey. For the first time, Oto-Tip can start getting you into this habit. We worked with our ENT advisors to create an automated spinning swab that lets people get the enjoyment and satisfaction of cleaning their ears, but simultaneously limits them to only cleaning in the outer part of the canal where they can do it safely. No matter how hard they push, the built-in safety cap prevents the tip from ever hitting the ear drum or pushing the wax deeper and shoving it off the natural “conveyor belt”. It empowers you to leave the wax beyond the outer part of your ear canal alone until it’s time for it to come out naturally on its own.What has been the best part of your startup experience?The best part of our startup experience is seeing our idea go from concept to reality. It’s exciting to see our technologies out in the world making ears happier. The most challenging part as a young company is getting the word out about Clear Ear and building awareness around this new way of cleaning ears with the Oto-Tip. For years people have had the habit of digging deep in their ear canals and we’re trying to break this bad habit. We’re excited for ’s Launchpad program to help us share our story with the world.
