Is it true that it's not (numerically) calibrated correctly out of the box?

If you mean is 1/32 of an inch 1/32 of an inch yes it is. You could us this to measure anything from 1/32 to one inch right out of the box.

does the pin stay in place after pulling it off the tire? the ones I have had always get loose therefor loosing the measurement.
