Does this work with the sawyer mini?

Yes, it does. It screws directly into the dirty water side. And then I guess you could use it like a straw. I don't do that, so I have no direct experience there. Since I have the "Dual Threaded Mini," the blue ring enables me to connect the platypus onto the clean water side. Or smart water bottles. For camping, I hate squeezing water, so I use the Sawyer gallon bag, some tubes, the mini, and then a larger clean water platypus screwed onto the mini. Having a clean water bottle screwing onto the filter avoids the problem of dirty water dripping down the gravity system and getting into the clean water, and the whole system just works better. The gallon bags does weigh 3.75 oz, but if you were squeezing you'd need a squeeze bag, plus a spare since they fail. If I never have to squeeze again it will be too soon.

Can you replace the "closure cap" with a normal size push-pull cap?

If you use a push pull cap on an airplane it will leak. With pressurization in a airplane cabin. Always use the screw on when flying with water in it.

Is it easy to hand wash?

We use it for liquor when we travel and it is very easy to hand wash.

Can you put hot water in this bottle?

Hot water can be put in the paltypus soft bottle. If there was a desire to keep the liquid throughout the day in sub freezing temperatures, you will want to carry the bottle inside your pack to provide insulation.
