For all the dark tones pulsing through Gauntlet Hair's 2013 album Stills, there is also a guileless affection for the goth industrialists and post-punks who blazed a shadowy path through the 80s and 90s. Recorded during Portland, Oregon's grey winter days in producer Jacob Portrait's (Unknown Mortal Orchestra) appropriately named studio The Cave, Stills is a modern salute to Trent Reznor and his cohort's arena-ready post-apocalyptica.

Awesome
So good! Drone, guitar laced, lush walls of sound, and sparse noise. A breath of fresh air. Nothing like this right now, harkens back to an echo wall of emotion, fun, sad & rockin'. Can't wait to listen to it again & again!

Bite-Sized, Yet Lot's To Digest
I'll preface this by saying Gauntlet Hair's first album is one of my favorite records of all time. But where their former effort was instantly accessible while remaining complex, layered, and experimental--"STILLS" lingers in the arena of being darker and more challenging for the entire ride. There are only a select few tracks on this album with the heart-throbbing pulse of the debut, namely "Simple" and "Heave" if you're the type that likes to cut to the chase ...I appreciate the evolution in their sound, however, and already found this short record worthy of repeated listenings. I'm confident it will continue to deepen it's hooks in me as I keep revisiting it.Bottom line: Much darker, slower, and more complex than the first record, but what it lacks in accessibility it makes up for in density of sound and scope.BONUS: I also wanted to make a quick comment that "Simple" is easily one of the best songs they've ever recorded! It has a flabby, funky, out-of-tune bassline over a steady electro drum beat and Prince-style funk guitar layers. At least do yourself the service of purchasing "Simple" and pick up more Gauntlet Hair tracks from there.

pop/psychedelic tribal/electro indie "rock"
2nd release from Chicago via Colorado band--addictively soaring psychedelic tribal rock with turbulent jazz-beat rhythms, electronic squelches and dark choral voices. An experimental pop element twists and abuses the melody, but never denies it; while fun & funky electro-strange pop bounces off the walls with chaotic blasts of indie rock noise. You might hear bits of Tame Impala, Sin Fang, Unknown Mortal Orchestra, Akron/Family, Pigeonhed, Barry Adamson, PVT, Animal Collective. "Stills" is a playful cacophony of electronically motivated indie rock splatter.
