Good for quick deep holes, but not clean ones.
I love the way this shovel looks and feels in the hand. I bought it originally for metal detecting. I have had the Lesche hand digging tool for years and it is AMAZING. I expected this shovel to be a larger version of the hand tool. However, despite this shovel's ability to easily penetrate the soil, the curvature of the blade is really too extreme to dig a nice plug unless the plug is the same diameter as the curve of the blade, which is really too small for metal detecting. If attempting to dig a plug with a larger diameter than the blade, it makes a real mess of the ground. This is fine if metal detecting in the woods or on land where preserving the aesthetics of the site is not an issue, but I would not use this tool to dig on somebody's nice lawn or a in a public place. One other gripe is that the gray paint on the handle comes off very easily. Upon receiving the shovel, some of it had already rubbed off, and continued to do so within the first hour or two of use. Again though, it is a tool that functions as it should. Other than that, I love it and I think it is a beautiful shovel.I have ordered the Lesche Sampson Mini shovel to try out as it seems to be better suited for digging clean holes and will be more low-profile when digging in public places.(If you are new to detecting and don't have any digging tools at all besides a normal trowel, I would recommend the Lesche HAND digging tool (with the serrations on the left side) to get you started).

Length and sturdiness
Super shovel, great blade length. 40" keeps me from bending over to set the shovel. Built on rubber covered step is great help. I lightly sanded the handle and put two coats of flourescent Pink paint on it for better visual in the field when I lay it down in the grass or field. Named it Dani, after my 3 year old grand daughter, her favorite color PINK.

good shovel with a bit of sharpening
i like the shovel, although it needed the tip straitened out and needed some sharpening. i used a 3 inch abrasive disc for sharpening. once that was done it really goes through large roots easily. the shovel is actually a nice width and works in really rocky soil, as it is easier to maneuver around rocks with a narrow shovel. it is easy to straiten the cutting edge with 2 hammers and a file. the shovel is sturdy and think it will last a lifetime. the shipping was good and arrived as expected. i would recommend this shovel. i think the 40 inch version is a nice length. this is my third shovel from this manufacturer.

what a wonderful shovel for metal detecting
what a wonderful shovel for metal detecting! It slices right through dirt like a hot knife in butter! Small roots too! Perfect design to make small and precise holes to uncover metal! The foot pedal is very nice, easy on the foot even if you are wearing shoes/sneaker. The handle is perfect to twist and break the dirt, very strong blade and nicely sharpened to penetrate! |It does seem expensive but once you have it in your hand, you'll know you spend your hard earned money right! Very strong and is the perfect height for adults. I was skeptical on how narrow this blade was but with the 'pinpoint' feature on most metal detectors, this now was not of any concern. Less digging equals to faster finds and longer time out searching!By far one of the best purchases I have made to make my life easier!

Fantastic!!! That's all I can say.
I was going to purchase the Root Assassin Shovel, but I saw one review that led me to this product. I have since seen the Root Assassin. It is nothing near as strong and well built as the Ground Shark. My neighbor that has the Root Assassin has borrowed my shovel several times now. I've moved Banana plants from a heavy compact soil. And I am up there in the years and do not have full strength in my left side due to a stroke. This shovel is the very best I think I have ever had. Wish I had found it years ago. This ground shark is heavy duty and well worth more money than the Root Assassin.

Go deep and through roots
I have only used this on a couple of trips but can report it works great. Very sturdy, sharp blades and easy to use. The downside of a product like this is the weight. Not the easiest thing to pack around so I use it more a walking cane and snake killer when going to and from our treasure spots.

The shovel is well made, the handle is attached at two points which should make it stronger. It is easy to dig with and the 40 inch handle allows you to dig without bending. The radius of the curve on the shovel digs a small hole which I would prefer a little larger but overall a good shovel.

I like it but didn't realize how long it is
I like it but didn't realize how long it is. It's twice the length of the Sampson shovel. I'm still pleased thato I bought it just would not recommend it for parks and manicured lawns. It digas deep but it's hard to make a neat hole. I will use it when I'm hunting farm fields and abandoned homesteads ect.
