Saturday at the Food Pantry

I work at a food bank and this story is so well written. It gives kiddos a real and dignified look at what a food pantry does with empathy!

This was such a heartfelt and thoughtful story about a little girl and her mother as they embark on a trip to the food pantry. This is Molly's first time, so we see through her eyes both the uncomfortable realities experienced by families in need and the joy and empowerment that comes when a community bands together to lift one another up. Both protagonists in this story are full of voice and empathy, and the illustrations are just ridiculously gorgeous and jump off the page. Please, please, please add this book to your classroom library! It's a wonderful story and a powerful teaching tool for destigmatizing food insecurity.

A wonderfully written and illustrated story about a first time weekend visit to a local food pantry. The main character sees a classmate in line who is embarrassed about “needing help” but the moral of “everyone needs help sometimes” comes through loud and clear. A subtle message about childhood hunger, wants versus needs, and asking for help when you need it. Bravo - I will read it to my class every year before our annual food drive for our local pantry. If you are looking for a book to help connect kids to “why” they are bringing in canned goods - this is the one.

Bought as gift for 7 year old granddaughter. She devoured it in one sitting! (She's an advanced reader for age purposes.) Loved the characters and asked lots of questions. Now she wants to volunteer at a food pantry!! Great book!!
