Rob Roy MacGregor
This discussion of Rob Roy MacGregor by Nigel Tranter is excellent not only for his story-telling of the most famous, or some folk think it is infamous MacGregor, but also for the history given and the insight. Tranter is a great Scottish historian and a good novelist. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book.I have read Sir Walter Scot's novel, Rob Roy, and enjoyed it also, but Tranter is far more accurate in his historic portrayal and insight, as I have said. I've read other books by Nigel Tranter and he is a very excellent writer. His writings were recommended to me by a member of Clan Gregor Society.I don't think I am related to the Dougal Ciar Branch of Clan Gregor (Rob Roy's). With an "A" list sept name in my family of Gregg and by word of mouth the old name was McGregor, it is a good bet that I am a MacGregor, also. The proscription of the clan name caused a lot of confusion and name changing. Even Rob Roy took his mother's clan name of Campbell. I can trace family history back to the Ulster Plantations, Fermanagh, Ireland in the late 1600's and early 1700's. Anyone reading this book will learn quite a bit of Scottish history. Thanks,Tigertail

Decendent
Some of the words are not familiar but that's OK it allows me to investigate the language during that time period and in Scotland.

Rob Roy
Having read the book now, it is very interesting reading; as is the main character, Rob Roy MacGregor. I found myself submersed in the life and escapades of this colorful, "outlaw" Highlander. I believe anyone who loves history, especially of Scotland, should have this for their collection. It is nothing like the Liam Neeson movie of the same title. You will enjoy it.

My ancestors are from Scotland. Interesting account of the Jacobite Uprisings in the 1700's. Further accounting of Rob Roy's life other than the Liam Neeson movie.

Research
I have used the book for my research on the MacGregors since their clan was banned in 1605.

Great History
I read Historical fiction as a general interest and have done as a rule for 20+ years. I want a basic historical overview and story . I Read simply for the joy of seeing a semi-accurate portrayal.

The life story of Rob Roy MacGregor
This book covers Rob Roys whole life story including the situation in Scotland at that time and his support of the Jacobite rebellion. As a descendant of the MacGregors I found it particularly interesting.
