Black Eagle

MVD gives a mediocre film a lovely treatment on disc!
Film reviews should really be saved for IMDb. What is pertinent here is the overall product itself. What can go wrong with Sho Kosugi in the starring role with Jean Claude Van Damme supporting? Well, I certainly found out after watching this disc. However, though the film itself was disappointing to me, the disc is really top notch. I can't imagine any other label giving this much love to Black Eagle. In addition to providing two cuts of the film including a significantly longer non-theatrical version, we also get a 35 minute featurette including many of the key players in the making of the film (writer, director, primary stars). This featurette really lent insight into the film's creation and in particular some missteps. There is also an additional 40 (!) minutes of interviews if that wasn't enough plus 11 minutes of deleted scenes. While I've read a review that states the film was processed too strongly to create a waxen look, I wasn't looking that closely and just sat back to enjoy the film.In any case, I can't say that this is a movie that I will revisit often, but the disc and packaging itself really struck me. It's clear that real effort was put into this set for a film that one wouldn't expect to see treated so kindly, and I applaud that.

Shame on me , watched over an hour of this, should have seen the signs....
Centers around a chinese man too dumb to push a ladder off the roof while being chased by killers. This is a Van Damme screen test at best, he should have turned this one down.I'm a die hared Van Damme fan, but this is a film that should not have his picture inthe thumbnail and one that he should have passed over.DO NOT WATCH THIS and assume this is typical of Van Damme.

The Ninja as James Bond!
In a lot of ways, this was like a few Bond flicks; in particular, "For Your Eyes Only" ... much of the plot, and scenes filmed in Malta (which features beautiful scenery). The action starts slowly and builds to a satisfying climax. This movie is not particularly loaded with action and martial arts, but there's more than enough for most viewers. Of course, we get to see Sho Kosugi fight JCVD a couple times. Although not on par with a Bond flick, there's a good variety of other stuntwork as well, including high dives, parachuting and even hang gliding. There's one decent car chase through the narrow streets of Malta. Most martial arts fans would have liked to see more, especially from JCVD who doesn't really fight anyone else. As the leading hero, Kosugi takes out many bad guys with his vast array of skills. There's also more than enough mushy scenes with Kosugi and his (real) kids for the action junky; but this may make it a bit more enjoyable for their viewing companions.

Not good
This movie is a bad movie. The Martial Arts scenes are terrible, the special effects are just as bad. The actress that was employed by the CIA, was ok. I feel as if they could have made her a little more bad ass. For the 95 % of the movie she was baby sitting the 2 boys. What little action they did give her, it was made weak(not by her doing). When she finial killed the guy near the of the movie it like she was said or incapable of diong. I thought at this point is where she was going to spring into action, but it never happened. Good concept bad movie.

Your classic Van Dam movie not as good a Blood Sport but not bad either I enjoyed it it's 3 stars because I had watched 5 martial arts movies that day and some like 5 DEADLY VENOMS / Challenge of the Masters etc so it was against some great movies but it's a good movie I'd recommend it

Hind of a fun Movie Jean Claude van Damn is not the star
The real star is NOT Jean Claude van Damn but a very good Chinese actor, the movie must have been filmed a very long time ago as Van Damn looks really, really young. There are some cool martial arts actions and it was an okay film

Listed as 2018 but it's 1988. Ripoff
This movie is listed as a 2018 movie. This is a 1988 movie. The minute I started it I realized it. This is a misrepresentation on Amazon's part. Watch out. False ad to get you to buy an old piece of garbage.

Movie is awful but I’m a HUGE Van Damme fan, so it was a must have. MVD did a great job with the slipcover adding 80s-90s nostalgia on the cover, adding “be kind, rewind” was pretty cool.

With terrible acting, awful dialog and some dreadful dubbing is a wonder this film is liked so much. I had not seen it in years and only had bad memory's of Black Eagle with Van Damme as the bad guy. Well I say baddie, he more of a henchman. I did already own the DVD but recently upgraded to the 101 cult collection Blu-ray. And ya know what.....it's really enjoyable. It's by no means a great film but it ain't a bad one either. Sure it shot on small budget and filmed all in one location but if the filmmakers are on a very limited budget, then they spent the money well. The acting is pretty poor, even the extras can't act. That's even if they knew they were indeed extras. I suspect the director just poled up in Malta with the cast and crew and asked locals and tourists to just carry on as normal while they shot the scenes. This was also JCVDs second film from the success of Bloodsport. His second film! And he was brave enough to play a villan so early on in his career, something not many action stars would do until they established themselves as heroes. Mind you Arnie did it with The Terminator but he had made a few film's before as was already well known. Van Damme does admirable job in Black Eagle and is convincing as the heavy. He even does he trademark grunting after roundhouse kicks like in Bloodsport. Oh and one thing I noticed was one of the baddies wearing really tight brown jeans, so much so it looks like he has a bad case of hemaroides in the front of his pants 😂The sum up Black Eagle, it's a low budget spy action film that has clearly taken influence from Bond and even plays like one. But it is not copying 007, just taking some pointers. The film has heart and the director clearly was enjoying it all without taking the p***. This film is begging for a remake with JCVD.

The 80's Sho!
What a decade it was for Martial Arts Film Genre and the best Sho Kosugi was involved in this one!He bought to us the way of the Ninja,a mysterious warrior of a Japanese lore! This was one of many he was involved in and he impressed in it!The 80's was a decade of great Music but also the Ninja Genre in Movies!

... saw this in 1989 on VHS cassette and I loved it, along with BLOODSPORT
I first saw this in 1989 on VHS cassette and I loved it ,along with BLOODSPORT!-I just had to get it on bluray as its a classic and I wasn;t disappointed one bit as the picture quality is fanstastic for such an old film..the bluray has no bonus features but its still worth buying on bluray as its never looked so GOOD.I couldn't really tell if it UNCUT but it looked fine to me and I simply enjoyed watching it on bluray,..do I 100% recommend it to fans of van damme?,'yes'.

Overall ok movie and Van Damme always makes his presence known
Good movie and really enjoyed it appart from the lead Japanese good guy. Couldn't connect at all with him.He was as plain boring as it gets. Van Damme was great and he plays his part to perfection. I was a fan of him in this movie and not the family guy goodie goodie crap agent. Good story averall and an enjoyable movie. Big credit to Van Damme to keep this movie alive as it would had been a disaster without him. Not one of the best movies of Van Damme. Picture quality is ok in blu ray. Could have done a better job as you see a few bits on the screen.

Poor quality disc
I bought film to add to my Van Damme collection but even though the disc isn't scratched or marked it just won't play properly. It keeps skipping chapters and will not play till the end, it just freezes. Disappointing really.
