I think it's definitely worth trying
Actually, I bought this Zoom (or Focus) Control in an attempt to get my zoom lens to work more smoothly when in video mode, and it did not help. Well, that's not the Zoom Control's fault, it's the fault of my lens (which never worked smoothly when the camera has been in video mode). I've learned to really like this camera accessory. I just find it more handy to use than the ring on the lens. I won't be removing it despite it not accomplishing what I had unrealistically hoped it would accomplish. It takes a bit of getting used to, but once you've tried it a few times, my guess is that you'll like it. It provides more control of the zooming in and out process. I haven't used it on the focus ring but my guess is it would do real well there too. But for zooming, it's a winner, whether you're taking photos or video. Expect people to ask you questions about it, as it's not something seen every day. If you don't want to bring attention to yourself, maybe avoid this. If you don't mind or would enjoy people asking about it, go for it. It was easy enough (not super easy) to put on. I trimmed the excess strap with a heavy duty pair of scissors. A small pair probably won't cut it, and having a large piece of strap protruding was annoying. So I trimmed it and smoothed it so it wouldn't scrape anything. If you only want to use it occasionally, no problem. You leave the strap in place and simply unscrew the rod. We're not talking about a major investment here, right? You have little to lose by giving it a try.

Nothing could be simpler, but it works!
When shooting video with a DSLR zooming or following focus by twisting the barrel of the lens is awkward and never as smooth as you would like. DSLR video rigs have addressed the problem for the pros with Rube Goldberg-like contraptions which provide focus and zoom knobs, a mount for a matte box, viewfinder mount, etc. and they can be quite pricey. This device, however, is so simple that the pros would laugh at it, but the laugh would be on them because it works as intended. The kit consists of four black nylon tie-wraps such as are used to bundle wires together and two polished rods which screw into the straps. With the camera on a tripod, moving the rod up and down results in a smooth zoom. The straps are releasable, but they are intended to be left on the lens with the rod removed when it is not needed. If you don't need or want a pricey DSLR rig, try this little gem for smooth zooming and/or focusing.

Piece of junk. It was next to impossible to get the gear strap on the lens and get it to hold.
