Minimalist hooks with near-permanent 3M VHB adhesive
If you hate the look of suction cup hooks as much as I do, and you need a solution for difficult areas, such as bathroom tile, these hooks are pretty good, but have some unanticipated drawbacks that are also worth mentioning. Here's what I like:---They are extremely low profile, and don't project out from the wall very far, which is good for cramped bathroom spaces like mine.---The backplate and hook look to be machine cut from the same continuous piece of metal. The description says "wiredrawing surface," although I'm not sure if that's correct--but I guess the 304 steel may have been pulled through a special die, and then die cut or stamped.---They have a clean, minimalist look to them, which I appreciate. I've used 3M Command Hooks in the past, but the limited styles always look to much like chunky locker room hooks, and I'd prefer my hooks to fade into the background. These have rounded square corners and a brushed satin finish, so they don't compete for your attention.---Not only do they arrive neatly boxed, but each hook is meticulously packed in its own envelope, and the front-facing surfaces are all covered in a protective peel-off film. There are a few issues worth mentioning, however:---The edges are not rough, but they're not smooth either. They'll be fine for towels or potholders, or sturdy items, but I would not want to use these hooks to hold my jewelry and delicate chains.---The curved part of the hooks doesn't look as good as the backplate. The backplate has the brushed satin-matte finish, but the underside of the curve looks dull and unpolished. Whether it's visible depends on where you hang your hooks. I've attached some photos below showing the undersides of both the single and double hooks.---These hooks use the 3M VHB adhesive, which is mostly permanent. It can apparently be removed (which I havent tried myself, but have read about on the 3M product page) but the process involves cutting, stripping, freezing, etc. So unless you want a big headache on your hands, you'll need to be 100% sure you have these hooks positioned correctly. If it stresses you out too much, and you don't need tough permanent hooks, you might be able to bond a patch of your own removable adhesive over the VHB instead. I have some removable mounting tapes that are okay for painted surfaces and indoor/outdoor use---but the drawback is that they add a millimeter of thickness to the backplate, so your hook becomes less low profile. For the right application, these hooks are an attractive option: simple, unfussy style, and a near-permanent bond.---Promotional sample provided for the purpose of evaluation and objective review.---
